Found out just now that I'm getting another student assigned to me.  Yes, I'm an experienced nurse so I understand why someone thought this was a good idea.  The fact is that ICU nursing has significant downtime and I can only fill a small portion of it with educational stuff.  I feel like I am responsible for entertaining someone and making small talk for 12 hours and I suck at both of those.

I don't hate student nurses or resent them one bit.  I just dislike having a shadow that I did not agree to.  I wish there was a way to decline this, but there isn't.

The next month or two is going to suck.

Never know they may be somebody you really get along with.  Also take the time to really teach them the ins and outs of nursing.  How to deal with shitty Dr.'s, annoying families, hospital bureaucracy, who the go to people are down in the lab to get things done, etc...  All the subtle things that it took you a few years to figure out.

Yeah, about 20 years ago as a student nurse, I was assigned to a school nurse.  She had no idea what to do with me and it was obvious she hadn't signed up for it.

My last one was gung ho, so I'd send her on Rapid Response calls and all sorts of fun things away from the ICU.  She liked it and it gave me time without a shadow.  Win/Win.

Nothing I can do will ever prevent some backstabbing bitch of a nurse from bullying a green nurse.  I do warn student nurses about it at least.  It's no joke.  They will set you up.

Yes, ICU nurses have ego issues.  dealwithitsunglasses.jpg

It completely depends on the student.  Some make the experience enjoyable, and can actually benefit you during the shift, whereas others simply get in the way.  The trick is to mold them into the former on the first day.  That being said, we had one that was absolutely worthless, to the point that we had to contact her instructors.  A couple have ended up working with us in the unit, and have become very good nurses.

You're in the ICU?

Check with some of the more friendly Docs and see if you can farm the student out to shadow them during down time...or with some floor nurses, OR nurses, etc...

I was a resident at a small community hospital....we were the Family Practice resident's 'surgical' rotation (most of it...they'd check out cases with the general surgeon and Ortho guy if he was around)...we'd generally have them peek in during some pre-op workups, watch us check on in patients (not too many), and watch a few surgeries....then let them do what they wanted in the off time (instead of watching us cut peoples toenails)....we were generally considered one of the better rotations.....

meh... my preceptor was a huge cunt.
Starting week  2, I had her full load. She sat her fat ass at the nurses station and caused drama for 12 hours straight.
I only called her when absolutely necessary. After week 2, she didn't even bother to check my meds.
Every 3 or 4 hours, she would come around and  find something to bitch about and then go away.
During night duty, after the 11p staff would leave, they made me answer every miserable call bell until  7a.....

That shit was so freaking miserable, I said "fuck it, i'm going to the OR."

In my and wifes hospital, the nurse has to agree and volunteer for it.  Having a student folowing you around is a big responsability that your not geting paid any extra money for, especially in a ICU setting.  I feel for you buddy, I enjoy having students, but not my wife.  We should all have the right to bow out of being a teacher if we dont want to do so.  I dont mind but I tell them they must keep up and that there are times like in truama that its best to save any questions until after the excitment has settled, in other words shut up, stand back and observe.

ICU nurses think they are all that but the ER nurse is the real tier one operator in the hospital.

That's all I got. Good luck with the student, hopefully she's receptive and competent.

Some of my best times in nursing have been in guiding new nurses (and even a few students) through the challenges of being a nurse. It is very rewarding to see someone you have played a part in training succeed. January will make 15 years as a RN for me 2 in med/surg, 9 in ICU/CCU, 4 in the ER. Love the job. Be nice to the new people, stand up for yourself and your coworkers when needed, and don't be afraid to laugh

I am a current student nurse. I have had extremely great preceptors and only a few "so-so" ones. I think that most of it depends on me and my attitude and bearing. I Really want to learn all I can from anyone who will share. I love the hands on part of my schooling and understand that after graduation (April!) and getting hired, my schooling will really start as a new grad.
I hope I am lucky enough to get paired with someone with a desire to share everything they have learned to assist me in becoming a competent nurse. I know that they will be getting a nurse eager to learn.

Just no call/no show and then it won't be an issue.

I hated being with preceptors who didn't want students. It made even less sense when I discovered that hospital didn't require it of staff, it was totally elective.

I'm no ER nurse.  I can't do their job.  We've had a stray ER nurse or two come up and it's less true in reverse - the ER nurses aren't the best, but they can do the ICU work for the most part.

I talk shit about ER nurses sometimes, but that doesn't change the fact that they are integral to the hospital and have to respond to some shit I don't want to.

I can't imagine a student nurse doing that to me.  I'm not a dick, but if I were then I could fuck them over.  Give horrible reviews or even flat out make up stuff and claim they were endangering patients.  I could potentially ruin someone's life.  The students know we could do that and have to trust us that we won't.

I've had both LVN and RN students over my career and no one has tried anything like what you mention.

The scope of practice for LVNs and RNs in Texas is very similar.  In most states, LVNs/LPNs are very different from RNs.  Not Texas.

My point is that, other than the being new to ICU thing, she would probably be correct to say that she can do it alone.

Ehhh i get student nurses a lot, most of them suck amd never want to learn shit. I still rattle off lots of patho, with hopes that the next will be into brains or maybe just want to learn something. But their eagerness to jump in and be a super nurse is usually just annoying as fuck. Best of luck to you, we all hate it. neuro icu charge.  And in regards to lpns, as charge if we arent doing MET team that night we have a lpn with us to take an assignement. Some are great, better than most rn assessments I've seen, others are fucking retards that i wouldn't have expected to pass a cna coarse.
