I am in the construction industry, the amount of opportunities that minorities have in this business is absolutely crazy, considering the only qualification is being of the right skin color. I was adopted at birth.
So, I don't know the category into which I fit. Perhaps I am White Hispanic. Perhaps I am Black Non-Hispanic. Perhaps I am Asian Non-Hispanic. Perhaps I am White Non-Hispanic. Perhaps I am Asian Hispanic. Perhaps I am Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander Non-Hispanic. Perhaps I am Black Hispanic. Not knowing my category makes me a victim of discrimination. I may be an oppressor or I may be oppressed, but without sufficient information I do not know. I believe I should qualify for a government grant to genetically determine my race and ethnicity. Without scientific evidence, I am forced to live with the uncertainty. I have to live with being an outcast because I cannot prove my color. |

After almost two decades of making films with my black producing partner, Marco Williams, I have come to believe that most whites see themselves as outside the American racial paradigm and their race as a passive attribute. Subsequently, they feel that they do not have the same right to speak about race as non-whites. The Whiteness Project hopes to bring everyday white Americans, especially those who would not normally engage in a project about race, into the racial discussion—to help them understand the active role their race plays in every facet of their lives, to remove some of the confusion and guilt that many white people feel around the subject of race and to help white Americans learn to own their whiteness—and everything positive and negative it represents—in the same way that every other ethnicity owns its ethnic identity. lol If someone asked me about my ethnicity, my answer would have nothing to do with the color of my skin, and I think that's true for most white people. |
