Hydrate that patty with water, add some beans, cheese and the crackers and hot sauce to taste.

Enjoy.

those dehydrated pork and beef patties had the consistency of a triscuit. tasted about the same as a triscuit too.

when you added water to them you ended up with something that had the consistency of a soggy triscuit. tasted about the same as a soggy triscuit.

I'll give you a hint - we almost stopped a field exercise the first time we opened an MRE and found a Tabasco bottle... They weren't in the first generation MRE's...

No, they still had the dark brown bags when the MRE heaters started showing up in '91 or '92, I bought a pack of them before an ROTC FTX and it turned out that was the first time we got issued them with our MRE's.

I was in ROTC from 1989 through 1993, MRE heaters came out during that time frame, I still have part of the pack I bought at Brigade Quartermaster's for that FTX (which was at Ft Gordon, IIRC).  Had my pay docked $3.33 for each day of the FTX to pay for meals (since we got $100 month as our stipend as a contracted cadet in the Army Reserves, that was the maximum they could deduct per day, my understanding is the stipend is a bit higher now, my dad got either the same amount or $50/month when he was a cadet in the '60's).

Not sure why the laughing emoji for the TP....man...I used to save every single pack of TP and keep them for the inevitable massive explosion after a few days in the field eating MREs for 2-3 meals a day. Yeah...you get backed up for a few days...but then...holy shit...then....

BOOM! SPLAT! Oh, thank God....

And then those 10 packs of TP you saved...yeah...need those.

ETA: and a cardboard stand for the packets lol...new ones have the "use a rock or something" on the heater pack.

When I was a kid in the 60's we ate C-rats whenever we could find them. They were good, but
I had no idea how old they were. My brother gave me a bunch of the brown MREs back in the 90s

and the only one I didn't like was the pork patty. The chicken a la king was the deal and the maple

nut cake was awesome. The cheese was pretty good, but the Peanut butter made excellent bait

for mouse traps. That stuff pulled the mice in like a magnet.

Wow blast from the past.  IIRC that MRE was before the cool-aid packs and mini-Tabasco jugs.  When out in the field I've traded out multiple MREs for that one.  The cheese spread on crackers and the chocolate covered cookie bar was very coveted at the time.
It was strongly believed in the field the cheese spread would help you finally take a shit.

It is probably 26 - 30 years old.

That was the very first MRE I ever ate.  It was 1984 at the Lewis Burwell Puller School for Wayward Boys - San Diego Campus, during a suntanning expedition to delightful San Onofre, just off Basilone Road.  It was about 15 minutes after exiting the gas chamber and the Drill Instructors made everyone who received the pork or beef patty eat the whole MRE without ANY fucking water.  Then after the bags were empty, chug a 32 oz canteen of warm water.  15 minutes later we were low crawling through our own puke.

Good times, good times!

I have several of those packed away somewhere. I got them back in '89.
As long as the bag isn't swelled up, there shouldn't have been any bacteria growth inside.
They are probably as good today, as they were when new.
They may have lost some of the flavor, but they weren't the tastiest things to begin with...

YMMV...

Found this in the desk of an employee that left about 2 years ago.  Had to clean it out before it got reassigned to a new employee and found it.

What are the odds that it's still good?  I have NO IDEA how old it is....

Sir..THAT is "hazing" and is explicitly NOT allowed....you are obviously telling a fib....

How was providing a nutritious meal, and adequate hydration during vital training exercises considered hazing?
hehehe
