I was in ROTC from 1989 through 1993, MRE heaters came out during that time frame, I still have part of the pack I bought at Brigade Quartermaster's for that FTX (which was at Ft Gordon, IIRC). Had my pay docked $3.33 for each day of the FTX to pay for meals (since we got $100 month as our stipend as a contracted cadet in the Army Reserves, that was the maximum they could deduct per day, my understanding is the stipend is a bit higher now, my dad got either the same amount or $50/month when he was a cadet in the '60's). |

Not sure why the laughing emoji for the TP....man...I used to save every single pack of TP and keep them for the inevitable massive explosion after a few days in the field eating MREs for 2-3 meals a day. Yeah...you get backed up for a few days...but then...holy shit...then....

When I was a kid in the 60's we ate C-rats whenever we could find them. They were good, but
I had no idea how old they were. My brother gave me a bunch of the brown MREs back in the 90s and the only one I didn't like was the pork patty. The chicken a la king was the deal and the maple nut cake was awesome. The cheese was pretty good, but the Peanut butter made excellent bait for mouse traps. That stuff pulled the mice in like a magnet.

Wow blast from the past. IIRC that MRE was before the cool-aid packs and mini-Tabasco jugs. When out in the field I've traded out multiple MREs for that one. The cheese spread on crackers and the chocolate covered cookie bar was very coveted at the time.
It was strongly believed in the field the cheese spread would help you finally take a shit. |

I have several of those packed away somewhere. I got them back in '89.
As long as the bag isn't swelled up, there shouldn't have been any bacteria growth inside. They are probably as good today, as they were when new. They may have lost some of the flavor, but they weren't the tastiest things to begin with... YMMV... |
