What ever technique you use to make those tanks look dirty is really cool.  They really look weathered and used.

I build models years ago, it was mostly aircraft and a couple ships but my skills were never as good as this as for many others posted in here.

Here's a few of mine. The P47 is my most recent one from about 6 years ago. The F16 was one my dad and I put together when I was a kid and the ME109 ( think that's what is is) was also from when I was a kid. They're all a bit cobwebby and dusty right now. I just used a wire and spray painted cotton balls for the smoke on the German plane. I've been working on a T76 tank too, but it's come to a screeching halt when a bunch of projects came up and I haven't gotten back to it

Ha, suck it German. That is very cool that you still have models you built with your dad. Wish I still did.

Whats with all the haters?!

I think its called projection.  Or just people who have no life, no friends, no talent, no skills, just plain miserable.

Lots of nice models here.   Its a relaxing hobby if done right.  But some people as with anything can get too twisted up over minutia, and ruin things for everyone else around, nit picking on every little thing.

OP, I just discovered you're not finished!

You need to paint a green star on the front of it.

14 February 1991: An unusual incident occurred during Desert Storm, when Captains Tim Bennett and Dan Bakke, United States Air Force, flying the airplane in the above photograph, McDonnell Douglas F-15E-47-MC Strike Eagle, 89-0487, used a 2,000-pound (907.2 kilogram) GBU-10 Paveway II laser-guided bomb to "shoot down” an Iraqi Mil Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter. This airplane is still in service with the Air Force, and on 13 January 2012 became the first F-15E to have logged over 10,000 flight hours....

Wow! There are some particularly talented modellers here! Great Thread OP.

OP, I'd like to +1 the suggestion to use "Future" (its called Pledge Floor Care now) as a sealant and prep for decals. You can use hobby shop gloss coat as well, you'll just pay the same price for 1oz as you would for a gallon of Future at Ace hardware. It leaves a nice smooth surface for the decals to adhere to. It also works wonders for the clear canopy plastic. fill a small cup and dip the canopy "glass" in the future. set it on a lint free cloth to dry. it will make the canopy glass look great. It also provides a nice surface to apply washes and other weathering effects. The wash flows right into the panel lines once the future is applied. You finish with a dull clear coat if you want a flat finish. Here's a MiG-29 that's right at that stage, a nice playmate for your mud hen:

I'm 43, father of one and I love the hobby. Been doing it since I was a kid.

Here are some of mine, all in 1/72 scale:

A6M2 Zero

1/72 Yak-3

P-38-J ETO

N1K1 George:
This one I started with a base coat of silver thinned with lacquer thinner to give it a good bite into the plastic, I then painted acrylic IJN green over the top and used a tool to scrape along panel lines, etc for the weathering.

Bf-109 K4:

Nakajima Ki-44:

Mig-29 (in progress) I still need to add the decals & weathering. The future coat is drying

I also like 1/35 Kraut armor:
Panther G:

Tiger II Porsche turret:
Kudos to ElevenBravo87 for doing a zimmeritt application by hand. That takes skill. I just bought the DML/Dragon kit that already has the zimmeritt molded! Nice job man!

holy details batman!. I would have loved to build that as a kid, me and my dad would build models together. Then we would go to the airshow and see the real planes in person. Talk about awesome. The best was when we built a model of a F-117 and then was able to see the plane in person at the Belle Chase air show. I brought the box that the model came in and I was able to get some of the crew that was with the Plane to sign it. I have no idea if they were actually the F-117 crew but they signed the box for a 8 year old.

Thanks! Yes, masking the canopy was a monumental pain in the ass. FSM magazine did a poll a while back asking modellers what their least favorite part of the hobby is. Masking canopies was near the top of the list. I'd say it was between 1/3 and 1/2 of the total build time.

Thanks. It takes a while to do it by hand as you can only work a section at a time. I used milliput and Trumpeters zimmerit tool to make it. The kit itself is a Tamiya and the Tiger is modeled after "Annelise" one of two Porsche Tigers (s. pz. abt. 503)  to survive the Normandy campaign. After I finish the M106a1 (4.2 Mortar Carrier) I am currently working on, my next project will be Ernst Barkmann's  Panther A.

Looks good, ben.  When you do your F-14 might I suggest you try your hand at the oil wash panel lining technique?  Basically once you have your paintjob mostly done you spray varnish the model with a gloss coat.  Then using a thinned oil paint you dab paint into the recessed panel lines, wipe away the excess and then varnish again in a satin finish.  Works wonders.

Here's an article about how to do it...
http://www.scalespot.com/reference/panellines/panellines.htm

And at about the 3:15 mark is a Russian dude showing the technique in a Warhammer 40k tank.
