Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Worth a watch, but overrated, IMHO. People kept going on and on about how great a movie (or mini-series) it was so I finally devoted 7 hours to watch it and when I was done I was pretty disappointed. It wasn't that it was bad. It was that it was extremely over-hyped. If I had never heard anything about it going in I probably would have liked it more because my expectations wouldn't have been as high. Again: IMHO. Try reading the fuckin' book. |

I've read the book. Both the book and the TV adaptation were awesome. Only reason the book is "better" is because of the massive amount of detail/backstory/etc. that was left out of the movie out of necessity. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

IMHO, Larry McMurtry writes excellent books, that end up with terrible endings. They are great reading until you get to the end, and then think, "Well, that sucked." On a related note, I was recently watching a great series on "The West" which was the history about the west. It told the story about Mr. Goodnight and his partner that opened up the Goodnight Trail. His friend was shot by Indians and had a leg amputated and died up north and made Mr. Goodnight promise to take his body back to Texas for burial, which he did. Sounds kind of familiar, doesn't it? |

You can probably guess from my quote on my info what my vote is.
Named my yellow lab after Augustus McRae. |

Yes, it is one of the best westerns ever made, the book is worth reading too.

Augustus: "Well, no wonder we ain't been chased! While we was in Mexico stealin' pedro's horses, hell he was back in Texas stealin' ours!"
<Woodrow laughs at the comment and the situation> Woodrow (with a big grin on his face): "I'll tell you what---we'll run straight at 'em, turn his herd into ours and kick for the river!" <Everyone smiles and laughs over the plan> Augustus: "It'll be a good joke on that ole bandit!" |

Hell yes. The look is slightly dated by today's standards but the story and characters are so strong you'll soon forget about the look. Great writing and dialogue, everything is top of the line.

Usually, if I like a book, I'm disappointed in the movie, and vice versa. In the case of Lonesome Dove, I loved both. View Quote You should check out J. Frank Dobie's "Cow People" I think that is the one. He gives a great deal of information on the men the character were based on. |

"I wouldn't say I did and I wouldn't say I didn't, but I will say this. A man that wouldn't cheat for a poke didn't want one very bad".
(Or something like that) Classic movie |

Quoted: This is another one of those shows that someone's opinion of it would help shape my opinion of them. I did a thread on this topic a while back after one of the dads in the troop professed his disdain for Jeremiah Johnson. Someone who doesn't like LD, I probably wouldn't care to hang out with because our world view and common interests are likely very far apart. View Quote |

I remember watching it when it was first aired on network TV. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it since, but it was enough that I pretty much wore out a VHS copy. View Quote We got a VCR specifically to tape it when it originally aired, I was just a kid. Wore out the original recording, wore out at least two vhs versions after, and I've gone through two DVDs. The remastered wide screen DVD is utterly amazing, looks like the movie was shot yesterday. Its on netflix btw Also, Quigley Down Under had the same director and composer, that's a clue. |

I am a surely bartender, but that hipster in the movie had a dragoon whacking coming.
When my dad and I get together to smoke cigars and he asked me to fix him a drink I invariably say "Rye, or what'll it be old timer?" |
