I wonder if Mata Hari really was a double agent. View Quote That was pretty well borne out by German records not too recently. At least, Wikipedia says so. I didn't search out the records myself. Weird, I got a wild hair about what her deal was, and she comes up here as a topic. (I was really looking for early internet porn ) |

The definition of "communist" was pretty damn vague for D'aubisson, and he didn't really give a damn about who's face he was melting off. Anyone who idolizes that psychopath is as big a fool as the Guevara shirt wearers. The political party he founded still pulls nearly 50% of the vote in the country where he committed his supposed crimes, so I must not be the only one who sees some value to what he accomplished. Alianza Republicana Nacionalista The Nationalist Republican Alliance (Spanish: Alianza Republicana Nacionalista or ARENA) is a political party of El Salvador. It was founded on 30 September 1981, by Roberto D'Aubuisson and Mercedes Gloria Salguero Gross.[10] ARENA controlled the National Assembly until 1985, and its next leader Alfredo Cristiani, was elected to the presidency in 1989. ARENA controlled the presidency from 1989 to 2009. ARENA gained a plurality in 2012.
By its strong anti-communist line, ARENA had the support of some members of the Republican Party of the United States, like the far-right North Carolina senator Jesse Helms, who supported Roberto D'Aubuisson in the process of development of the party. The ideology the party affirms to believe in is a system of democratic and representative government, emphasizing individual rights, the family as the nucleus of society and the respect for private property. "Supposed crimes"? Holeee shit. And Monterrosa wiped out the ERP at El Mozote, right? As long as we're bringing up non-sequiturs, FMLN is every bit as popular as ARENA. |

Yep. I would also add Rhodesia-the whole thing General Pinochet. I know some fancy-pants here will wail and gnash teeth, but Pinochet did what was necessary to not get Rhodesiad. He also voluntarily gave up power. He was clearly the lesser of two evils. |

There was a huge propaganda effort waged against the anti-communist right in El Salvador - CISPES and Ed Asner, anyone? - so presupposing that every accusation leveled against the anti-communist paramilitaries is true is questionable at best. But I get that you don't agree. After all, that's the premise of the thread, unfairly maligned historical figures. You're perfectly entitled to your opinion. |

The Shah of Iran, got sold out by Carter causing all manner of problems that we're still dealing with today. And as a group, the Crusaders, specifically the ones of the First Crusade. Vlad III aka the Impaler, sometimes you have to outdo barbarians to stop barbarians. |

You keep dredging up strawmen: ARENA, anti-communist paramilitaries, Ed Asner.....we're talking about Roberto D'aubisson. Stay on topic. Or you know he was every bit the monster that he was and you're good with that. How is the popularity of the political party the man founded a 'strawman' when discussing his legacy? For that matter, how is discussing the propaganda efforts waged against him during his life a 'strawman' when discussing whether or not he was unfairly maligned? It's a simple fact that the there was a concerted effort by the international Left - much of it KGB financed disinformation - to discredit the anti-Communist Right during the El Salvadoran Civil War. No one serious denies such a thing anymore. The Communists and their fellow travelers in Hollywood went to great lengths telling people that the FMLN were the authentic voice of the majority of El Salvadorans and that the Right was a School of the Americas trained, CIA financed front with no real popularity among the people. Well, the results of 25 years of democratic elections proves how false that premise was - El Salvadorans have consistently voted for ARENA party candidates, usually making them the largest party in the national assembly. But I get that you don't agree, I really do. And you're perfectly entitled to your own opinion. |

William Bligh
Bligh went on to serve under Admiral Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen on 2 April 1801, in command of Glatton, a 56-gun ship of the line, which was experimentally fitted exclusively with carronades. After the battle, Nelson personally praised Bligh for Bligh's contribution to the victory. He sailed Glatton safely between the banks while three other vessels ran aground. When Nelson pretended not to notice Admiral Parker's signal "43" (stop the battle) and kept the signal "16" hoisted to continue the engagement, Bligh was the only captain in the squadron who could see that the two signals were in conflict. By choosing to fly Nelson's signal, he ensured that all the vessels behind him kept fighting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Bligh |
