They were filthy and lazy because they didn't really know how to take care of themselves and dependence on others was ingrained into every fiber of their being. Sure, they wanted to be free of Serbia. But, it wasn't because they wanted Kosovo to become an independent nation state. They wanted to become part of Albania or Macedonia. Or, if we'd have had them, they would have accepted becoming part of the United States. Prior to the break up of Yugoslavia, almost all governmental jobs in Kosovo went to Serbs, not Albanians, Romany, or members of any other sect. That included sanitation workers and firemen. So, when the Serbs left, the Albanians didn't really have the first clue how to take advantage of their new found semi-independence and run things for themselves. That meant trash wasn't removed, fires weren't fought effectively, mail wasn't going anywhere, the power grid was haphazard and non-reliable, buildings were built looking like shit. They were like children who had been mistreated, not given any responsibilities, not had any discipline instilled in them, and not allowed outside of their bedroom for most of their lives; children who reach their teenage years and think that running away from home, with dreams of living with their older cousins in a shitty, run-down apartment on the wrong side of the tracks, with shitty utility connections means they're now mature adults and know more than anybody who tries to tell them that they're making mistakes and going about things the wrong way.

You're failing pretty miserably at the "not being a dick" thing.  And the atrocities of the Bosnian conflict were perpetrated by all sides.  The Serbs were just way better at kicking ass raping and slaughtering innocent men,  women and children , so we made them the bad guys.

Having been deployed to Kosovo in 2000, and spending the first month of the deployment sleeping in, and working out of, the MUP (Serb paramilitary police) compound in Ferizaj / Urosevac, where I got to see, firsthand, the blood-splattered rooms they used for torturing and raping the Kosovar Albanian population, and having spoken to numerous Albanians who've reported to me the abuse they suffered at the hands of the MUP, I have no illusions about just how depraved they were, and just how badly they'll treat people they feel are their inferiors.

Of course, I didn't trust the Albanian population any further than I could throw them, either. It was pretty obvious they were just biding their time to rearm and regroup, so that they cold take the fight to their former oppressors. They would lie through their teeth and talk out of both sides of their mouths, telling us what they thought we wanted to hear, in order to keep us around. And, they were about the laziest and dirtiest group of people I've ever seen. We started a "Clean Up Zegra" initiative, where we'd bring LMTV's to the little town which housed our Firebase, so that we could help them haul trash out of the river which flowed through the center of town. The nasty fuckers used the river for drinking, cleaning, irrigation, watering livestock (and as a pathway to move them to pasture, all the while they pissed in it), and as a town dump. There were abandoned cars, household appliances, and general household refuse (to include soiled diapers) littering the river. The lazy fuckers wouldn't lift a finger to clean up their town. They just sat at a cafe across the street, sipping tea and watching us. The kids would come over. But, they'd just as soon beg us for candy and sodas as help. We'd give them a trash bag and tell them to pick up trash and we'd give them sodas and candy. Little lazy fucks would pick up one piece of paper, toss it in the bag, and expect to get a reward.

The truth is, neither party involved in that war was a friend of ours and there wasn't a justifiable benefit to our national interest in helping either side. We should have let them handle it themselves and dealt with the victor in whatever manner they deserved.

Are you saying that the local Muslim population ran their little corner of Europe like a third world shithole?  That can't be.
The Muslim world is known for it's enlightened, cosmopolitan and charming inhabitants.

I can take you to the range and you can play around with the M4, G36 and all those toys.

What would it be like to be an English-speaking tourist and driver in your country?  I'm thinking of taking a trip in a few years and might put that region on the list.

Failed states, plus long term ethnic strife, plus no accountability, plus a culture based on fatalism (whatever god wills will be) equals a filthy dirty nasty place where life is cheap.

Of course they'll clean it up.  Perhaps tomorrow, god willing.

I can't blame the Serbs for being pissed at them taking over their version of the Alamo.

So OP, what countries can a Serb travel to or not these days?  What's the mechanism for saying no?  Is it the destination nation's policies or what?

This is American privilege based ignorance  talking.  I'm embarrassed to say I'm pretty used to being able to go about anywhere I want with my pretty blue passport.  I can only think of a handful of countries I can't go to, so I'm not used to it.

Anyway, dumb questions:

Is there free travel between Serbia and the EU/US/etc?

I know I can go to other former Yugo places, and that our visa process is a bit impenetrable for some nationalities.

Well, probably the same as most of the eastern Europe. Older people generally can't speak English, but everyone tries to help as much as possible. If you plan on passing through Serbia, I stand at your service if any help is needed :)

We need Visas (not the credit cards) for most of the world, excluding our neighboring countries and most of the EU (excluding i think UK and Switzerland). And that is only for up to 90 days stay per year. So we are pretty restricted (I've seen a case few days ago when a girl qualified for a Cosplay world competition held in London, but her Visa request got denied by the UK embassy stating something similar to "It is highly that you could afford to stay in London for a whole month with your average paycheck, this must be an immigration attempt"
Also, getting US visa is quite hard, most of the people get declined. But it is always up to the selected countries embassy to decide if you get it or not.

Regardless of the reason for their belonging to a given religion, their culture includes an unconscious but nearly complete abdication of personal responsibility that flows FROM certain religions. When you live your life subject to everything happening only if (deity) wills it, you stop taking responsibility.   For everything.  It's easy because it's all deity's doing if something  bad happens, or if the neighborhood looks like shit and there's no food.  It's not my fault because deity willed it so.

If you've ever driven in the land of "if (deity" wills it) you'll know what I'm talking about.  Brakes?  Signals?  Lol!

This isn't to say that any given faith is better than any other.  Just that those including such provisions tend to have predictable societal effects after a time.

That sucks.  I've never been asked what my income level was to travel.  The Austrian school of Economics that I studied in college was pretty much in favor of people and trade goods being able to cross borders easily.  I think that's a good goal to have.   Unfortunately, before we can do anything close to that, we need to get our do gooder types here to quit offering everybody free shit and making us pay for it.  The old way we had of letting folks in if they wanted to come here was better.

Yeah, I wish it was easier to go and work in some kind of a normal country (I mean a country with decent living standards). But getting a regular visa is hard enough, getting work visa is... challenging. You have to have a job waiting for you (the company has to send you some sort of "invitation letter") and even then it is hard. A buddy from my college got invited to work at Facebook (he previously did a summer internship there, and they offered him a job when he gets through the college) and his work visa request got declined, so they transferred him to their Canadian office (and Canada approved his work visa)

Yeah, since I got a kindle 4 (old, non-touchy one, I've been devouring the Black Library novels). Only bad thing is that 40k is a too expensive hobby for me, so i must stick to the books :(

Yes, too expensive and far too time consuming.

I mostly like it for the written lore and artwork. Shame no one has made a decent movie based on one of the novels.

Also, check out this youtube channel:

I've visited Kalemegdan and its military museum, the Tesla museum, walked around a lot downtown, and had lunch at the Hotel Moskva.

What would you say are the top 5 places a tourist should check out in Belgrade, besides the above?

Nice! That place looks the same as how I remember it.

It’s ironic that it is raining in your pic.

I was there in the summer of 2011 and got tickets for an open-roof bus tour around the city, just like this one

The bus follows a specific route around the major touristy areas. You can listen to the historical backgrounds of the places through the supplied headphones (pre-recorded) on the bus and it would stop at different spots for passengers to get out. There were multiple busses so you could take your time checking out the area and hitch a ride with another tourist bus later with the same ticket.

Well, my bus started at Hotel Moskva, rode around the city, and halfway through the trip the skies suddenly darkened. 5-minutes later there was this epic monsoon of a rainstorm pouring an ocean of water. There was water was gushing down the steep roads and alleys like a freaking white-water river (it would've been awesome kayaking down those streets), and here we were in a roofless bus.

Pedestrians huddled under building overhangs or café tents and were looking at us like

I just kept laughing the rest of the ride until we got dropped off back at Moskva and went inside soaking wet as if I had jumped into the Dunav. The rain didn’t let up and the hotel I was staying at was a few blocks away, so we just ended up eating lunch there at Moskva, while totally soaked. Good times!

From Bihac to Petrovca village
Serbian country is attacked as a whole
Karadzic (Radovan) lead your Serbs
Let everyone see that Serbs are not afraid of anyone
Bring the fight to Croatian Ustase
Dont touch our homes (heart stones)
Karadzic (Radovan) lead your Serbs
Let everyone see that Serbs are not afraid of anyone
From Krajina the wolves are gathering
Beware, Ustasas and Turks
Karadzic (Radovan) lead your Serbs
Let everyone see that Serbs are not afraid of anyone
In defense of our Serbian origin
We fight, we hold freedom dear
Karadzic (Radovan) lead your Serbs
Let everyone see that Serbs are not afraid of anyone
That is the pretty much literal translation

Here is a fun fact that I am sure not alot of people are familiar with.....

When the Serbian flag flew over the White House.....

As far as Serbian and Russian languages, they have alot of similar words. If you know one it would be pretty easy to pick up the other one quickly.
