So the cops have gun sniffing dogs. lol Are the cops carrying guns when they are running the dog? The only "gun sniffing" dogs I have heard of are game warden dogs that look for spent shell casings, but can find guns also. Never heard of anyone else having them because sniffing guns doesn't generate revenues for departments like sniffing drugs. You would be hard pressed to convince me as a juror that a dog found a gun in a car if a trooper was wearing a gun, or had had a gun on earlier, while he was looking for a gun. lol Think about that for a second. That is like a 100% chance the dog will alert. A Police K-9 pointed out my truck at work one time, there just happened to be firearms inside you tell me they have dogs that can sniff out explosives. So I wouldn't doubt they have dogs sniff out guns |

So I was in NY picking up some gear I stored at a friends house in NY. I had 8 empty 50 call ammo cans and a Pelican carbine sized case with a soft case inside. I was headed home to my new home in PA going up 17 when I got pulled over for allegedly speeding. Trooper approached I produced my stuff. He looks in the back seat and asks what's in the cans and the case. I said air. He asks to take a peek I politely refuse. Visibly angry he starts to tell me about the gun sniffing dog NYSP have and that under the SAFETY act he has the right to detain me. I smiled and said Oh really? Tell ya what Sir. I will wait for the dog. He stepped back flummoxed. He started with if there's nothing in the cans and case how come I can't look. I told him the 4th ammend. Is why.He mumbled something to the affect of me being one of those guys and then asked me if I was a lawyer. I replied no I have a soul. I then asked him how long did he think the dog would take to get here. He told me to sit and walked back to his car. I also asked him if the SAFETY act was the same as the SAFETY act. He didn't answer. 15 mins later he walks back throws my stuff at me and tells me I'm lucky he has a "crime call" and takes off lights and siren. 5 mins later I see him at a gas station just sitting there. I chose to go to a different station so as not to press my luck. I know CSB but.... Be wary. View Quote That kind of experience would compel me to buy some extra ammo cans and an extra gun case to leave in the back seat permanently. |

Ehh. Staties have always been professional and pretty decent to me. Last time I had an interaction I got pulled over for tinted front windows. Legit gripe. Female trooper, checked the tint, said that it was a targeted deal due to drug problems in the area. Had a 1911 on my hip and a Garand on the seat next to me. No questions, just said that I might want to remove the tint to avoid future problems, no ticket, have a good day.
I have dealt with asshole cops, they do exist but troop E staties have always been more than fair. YMMV.

So I wouldn't doubt they have dogs sniff out guns It could just be the ammo in the firearm they're sniffing out since double-based propellents have nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine. Otherwise, I'm not sure exactly what they would be hitting on in terms of the gun itself. |

Back in fall of 2012 I got pulled over in Maine for a plate light. Had my wife's car, and the entire cargo area was covered with ammo cans. He must of been one of the leo that don't like civilians having same or better rifles then them. |

Awesome job Chief!
NYSP rank and file are for the most part against SAFE, but there are also plenty of true believer assholes too...sounds like you ran into one, but handled it, like, well, a Chief! Have a cold one in the goat locker on me! ETA The brass on the other hand, especially at the top, if you know what I mean, are a bunch of Cuomo ball lickers... |

Oh man, sounds like the experiences I had with the NYSP when I was younger. Can't believe he didn't know the acronym for the bogus laws he was trying to use against you. They never like it when you don't consent to a search, and they always threaten to get the dogs or a warrant. They just want you to consent and they'll say anything to get you to. I haven't had an officer try to search me since I was a teenager, but I always keep my firearm related stuff in the trunk and out of sight. Glad you made it back across the border to freedom without too much trouble.

I wonder what happened to all of those Troppers that said they would not enforce the Safe Act as they thought it was BS.
