Ha...  the Math Minors are coming out of the wood work.  So you're smart enough to know that you need more data....

1285yds.  It took me two shots to get on target, then hit three targets with three shots after that.  Targets are regular balloons, about 9" across and 12" high or so.

Currently 300y is the longest I've made hits and that was with my 20" 6.5G.

My S&W 308 will be used when I go shoot my friend's precision rifle course, and that will be out to 1000.

Have regularly connected on rockchucks at 500 +/- yards... some further, but not with regularity. This is shooting a 20" AR with either 60gr, or 73-77gr bullets.

I did walk a few shots in on a prairie dog at something over 700 yards with the same gun... took me 10 or 15 shots to get the range and wind just right... Wyoming is like that. When I hit him, it looked like someone punched him straight in the chest as he was picket-pinned on top of his mound. 73gr Berger LTB din't make a huge mess, but he was toast.

I really enjoyed your video thanks for posting. About 2 years out of high school I went three for three on a 700m man sized silhouette with a K31 who's owner was shooting on the bench next to me on a range just outside San luis Obispo, Ca. It was pretty sweet, but I attribute it more to luck than anything else. He went to that range with that rifle just to play with that target and he walked me through hitting it. It was iron sights, which made my day.

I think I put a round in orbit once.  The gun was an M68 in an M1 tank, the target was at 3 klicks, the round was APFSDS.  The gunner screwed up and indexed HEP.  Darn that Safety Officer was pissed.

It was in 1978 so I may be off a bit on the 3K but not the orbit part.  I was in the 1-77 Armor, 4th ID from Ft Carson.  We were training at Ft. Irwin before it became the NTC.  We were amazed by the size and distances available, compared to Ft. Carson, so we were trying long range shots for shits and grins valuable training.

Handguns? My only distance of any note was a plastic bucket some friends stuck out at 100yrds. Went 3/6 with a glock 36

Rifles? Sadly the only 100yrds. The range close to me is an indoor 25rd range, and the closest outdoor rifle range is a two hour drive.

I am pretty proud of my 2.5in group at said 100yrds with open sights and my 18in ar

Have to work on consistency though

My son's words:

"Old man hits 1 mile...

Dad made a hit on the 1 mile plate at the
range yesterday on his second shot with my 300wsm.....he sees the
benefit of a level bubble ring when shooting extreme distance. We'll
probably give it another try and set the bench up for a left handed
shooter instead of forcing him to shoot the correct way.

When
sighting in we were on target with a hit in 4 shots. Darn close on the
first 3 shots, close enough the target if it had been alive would
probably think about moving. "

The next day or so we did set up so I could (naturally) shoot left handed.  Between my son & I we put 16 of 20 shots on a 24" target at 1 mile.  Time Precision rifle, 30" barrel chambered in 300WSM.

Personal best with Pedersoli Sharps 45-70 "Big Smile" rifle with Vernier sights - 966 yds.  405gr cast lead bullet running at 1300fps.

Made a hit at the lower left corner of the red inner target.

Longest & closest I could manage at was 1350yds, just low of the target.  I could barely see the "white speck" at the bottom of the front sight post.  That's how far over the target I had to hold.  My son was watching as the bullet traveled & he could see the arc some 50' OVER the target.

Longest kill on a prairie dog - 861yds.  Head shot.  Go figure.

not to mention the plastic sights on that trainer left a lot to be desired.

Usually people with this mentality have nothing more than a 100 yd range at their disposal. They don't understand that long range shooting is fairly simple once you have your dope and learn how to read wind. He would probably say I was lying if I told him I made 7/10 hits on a steel target at 400 yds with a 4x scope on a .22LR.  And then I would post the video.

Funny you mention .22LR.

I train at 300-400 yds with a modded 10-22.

It's easier on the shoulder than a day of lobbing 240's out of a .300 RUM.

From my original answer. 2000m with an XM107 with a bunch of witnesses, nearly all of them 2 star and above.  Shot about 5 or 6 10 rd mag fulls. 90% hits with M17 tracer.

Working at my day job, once a week, taking rifles out to the range and regularly firing out to and hitting 1800 meters.
When that is your job, you get pretty Damn good at it.

Apparently Arfcom is populated by 1000yd+ super snipers.

Some of us actually do shoot a little bit.

And with the right equipment and a little knowledge getting hits isn't all that hard.   I'm not going to win a bench rest smalleat groups competition but I can hit a steel plate.

At a LaRue Range Day spotters walked brand-new shooters onto a 1k-ranged steel gong... all day.

One of those spotters was Todd Hodnett, though. Just having him on the glass increased the shooters skill.

To be fair, even the other spotters were pretty damned good.

I used to shoot .22 shorts at max range like a mortar.  Over water.  Pretty far, but you could easily see the splash on a calm day since I was elevated probably 30'.  Accuracy?   Naaaaaa.  Might have been able to hit something the size of a 55 gallon drum 1 shot in 10.  But you could get it in the neighborhood.

Real shooting, maybe 150, 200 yards tops with a scoped .270 or .280.

The furthest I've ever shot is 300yd at a class in probably 1996 or 97. With a real, NM M14 (non full auto) that was loaned to the club. It was... exquisite.

I want to get back out with some of my own guns (I didn't even own any rifles at the time!) and get out to at least 600. Just haven't found the time yet.
