we have thousands of 12ga vs ar threads
hundreds of stock/barrel length/ comp/flash hider/VFG threads I have seen a few condition centered discussions But for those of us that keep a condition 1 AR for HD how big a loaded mag mag do you keep in the well please share your preferred ammo if you care to I keep 20 rounds of 62grn hollow points ready |
30+1, Hornady TAP 75gr 80265 and a spare mag on the night stand.
30 round Colt magazine filled with 62gn bonded soft point, with reloads nearby.

to the guys voting >40, out of curiosity what kind of scenariofantasy are you preparing for?
30 round mag on empty chamber. If the bad guy is too close to chamber, then I grab my cocked and locked CZ 75.
One 30 rounder in the gun, a number of loaded spare 20 and 30 rounders stashed all around the house in case I need a reload.
30 round mag loaded with 3 rounds to give the bad guy a sporting chance.
Serious answer: One 30 round mag in the gun. |
Right now 30. If I switch to 6.8 it will be 25. The lure of 120 grain bullets is calling me.
2 30rd Pmags full of Speer Gold Dot's joined by a magpul mag coupler.
So, 60rds. |
Think I have 300 or so. I keep the AR with one 20 rounder in it. Then 50 Cal ammo can full of 30 rounders loaded. I think 10 or 12 fit in there.
I voted "30", but I actually keep a metal 20 in the pistol and a PMAG 30 in the carbine. It just depends on which one's out of the safe.
Ammo is usually M193's and M855's staggered at 2:1. There's better choices I guess, but that'll more than do the job. |
I had a class with Jerry Miculek one time and he answered a question with " the only time more ammo isn't a good thing is when you are swimming with it." There is some truth to that.

Personally, I don't buy the BS about modern quality spring steel wearing out by keeping the mags loaded- but I also keep my mags one or two shy of full because it makes it way easier to tap in a new mag on a closed action. |

28 Why not a full mag? Meh, I think it's a moot point. I keep a full mag inserted, so heaven forbid I need to reload, it will be because that one ran dry and I'm inserting it on an open action. Either way, I don't have any problems inserting a fully loaded mag on a closed action. They fit with ease. |

What I have immediately available is my carry pistol. 12+1 +17 +17...though if I have time to grab the rifle from under the bed it'll have a 30rd mag.
20 round mag of Winchester PDX 60 grain SP in the 14.5" carbine and a 30 round mag of Hornady 75 grain in the drawer.
The handgun in the same drawer of the nightstand is a Sig P229 in 9mm with 16 rounds of Federal HST 147 grain JHP. Both the carbine and the handgun have Streamlights. |
I use a 30 rounder. But a 20 rounder has some advantages. The magazine doesn't stick out as far, so you are less likely to bump it into stuff. Plus it's a 1/3 lbs lighter. That is not an issue for home defense. But it might be nice in a post Katrina situation when you are carrying the rifle for hours. And 20 rounds is probably more than you will ever need.

I have a few that just don't like to take all 30 rounds though- I really have to beat the shit out of the mag to make it lock (only with PMAGs for some reason..??) I don't take an issue with leaving a full mag IN the weapon; I was mostly referring to any mags that are just laying around (spares/backups, range mags, kitchen mags, safe mags, sofa mags, etc..) |

Mine leans in the corner with a 40rd Pmag in it. If I'm carrying around the ranch I usually have a 10rd Pmag in it with 3 or 4 30's in the jeep in case I decide I want to shoot before I go back to the house.
ETA: Loaded with plain old M193...I keep meaning to order ammo but I keep putting it off. |

All mine are loaded to 28 so whether it's in a chest rig, range bag, or in the AR it has 28. I have no idea where the spring wearing out mentioned above comes from. I do it because sometimes a 30 round mag with 30 doesn't seat properly on a closed bolt. With 28 I've never had that happen. |

I have a belt-fed, double barrel AR with a khukri bayonet and a claymore strapped to my groin. Extra belts of ammo are stapled to the wall every three feet. |

Why do you hate freedom? We now have to justify the amount of rounds we prefer to have available? We have that many because we want to and can. Good enough for me. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Standard capacity. 30. Not allowed any more than that in my state (no SBR stamp yet ) , but I do have a backup mag.

28 rounds, because that's all the mag holds. Well, I could go with 29 rounds, but I'm comfortable just loading the thing and chambering it without topping off the mag. (6.8)
