The most influential concept was the bored through cylinder.

It was really a game changer.  Sure, the first was chambered in .22 short, but consider the effect it had on firearms design.

The best product they produced was the Model 19 (Combat Magnum).  It is the penultimate representation of the K frame, the most successful double action revolver of all time.

The older revolvers, (19, 10, etc) M&P comes close, but not quite. They're good, but they aren't the pure sex of craftsmanship like the older stuff.

Since nobody's mentioned it specifically (and I have one), the pre-war/pre-registered magnum, 38/44 outdoorsman.

The triple lock was an interesting exercise in mechanical ingenuity, but didn't have heat-treated cylinders.....

THIS.

It has been the benchmark for DA revolvers for 100 years.

And in spite of all the youngin's saying it is "old school", I would not consider myself "under gunned" with one of these and modern ammunition.

This! Especially the pre-lock versions.

Model 686 - almost pretty, tough as fuck, good for pistol whipping

Third generation 9mms: 3913 - One of the finest carry pistols EVER. 6906 - The Minigun. GREAT all around pistol, home or carry. 5906 - Add night sights and a factory 20 round mag with +P ammo and it is the FINEST home defense, threat management tool ever made. 5903 - full sized, aluminum framed, GREAT, under rated, never discovered, carry weapon under a cover garment, add a 17 round flush fitting Mec Gar mag. Of course, Sonny Crockett was kind of partial to his 4506.  :-) Sorry Glock/Block guys. DA/SA - THE answer to threat management for everyone who does not fire at least 1000 rounds a week.

All of these have been mentioned before.

1. The Triple-Lock -- Set the standard for double action revolvers for the twentieth century.

2. The Registered .357 Magnum -- A huge step forward in velocity and power. And each revolver was a made-to-order handcrafted work of art.

3. The .44 Magnum -- Held the title "The World's Most Powerful Handgun" for many years.

4. The .357 Combat Magnum -- According to Bill Jordan "The Peace Officer's Dream"

Honorable mention - - The original 581, 681, 586, and 686 revolvers which introduced a new frame size, the L-frame.

1-4 were all introduced when S&W revolvers had names, not numbers. The .357 Magnum would be given the model number 27 and the .44 Magnum, the number 29.
The Combat magnum was only produced for about a year before it was given the model number 19.
Pre-19s are rare.
