Just broke on Fox news. Anyone know what's going on?
ETA: Updated title |
|
Hopefully small and unrelated to tomorrow.
ETA: 2 p.m. update: Austin-Travis County EMS has confirmed that one person was pronounced dead at the scene of a plane crash in Austin Wednesday afternoon. It’s not clear if he was the only person on board the privately owned aircraft. |

Was it Austin where the small plane hit the IRS building a few years back?

This happens on a weekly basis.

While tragic, not uncommon.
There are around 400 US general aviation deaths every year. More than one a day. |

still going through things but that looks like the bird marked as N1YM on Flightradar24... 1841z ATC audio - about 6:00 in is when they start holding aircraft.... I think I hear something at 1:21 http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kaus/KAUS2-Sep-10-2014-1830Z.mp3 1:21 on the recording is 18:31:21z |

Drove past it a bit ago. near hwy 71 and 973. looks like they are fighting a brushfire now. It's right in line with one of the runways. You can see the smoke for quite a ways.

There is a radio call about smoke/fire at 1:23, but I didn't hear any mention of a crash. I could have missed it though, those folks talk fast in a language I'm not accustomed to. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I had listened to the previous 30 min recording (leading up to the smoke-fire call at 1:23) and didn't hear any mention either |

Mark would not be flying out of that Airport. Very rare to see a non-jet/turbojet there.
I think CAF might occasionally fly in - but that is special. |

View Quote I see small planes going in and out of ABIA almost every time I drive by. In fact, seeing small planes is what surprised me. I figured they'd mostly fly into the Austin Executive Airport up off of 130 nearer P-ville. |

View Quote I just counted 28 light aircraft (likely piston engines) parked on the ramp to the west of the new runway (9000 ft rwy). There could be many more inside the 3 light aircraft hangars on the south end of that ramp. |

I only drive by 2x a day. I stand corrected. Still, plenty of easier to use hobby airports still around than to go to Austin's main airport.

View Quote Thanks. The following is a preliminary review of this tape looking for transmissions between 711YM (Yankee Mike) and the tower. Times are times from the link above and reflect time from the start of this recording and are not time-tagged to actual time. The times are close but may be off by a few seconds. This may be updated to correct minor errors and it may not include all transmissions involving 711YM. 12:34 Incomplete initial call up by 711YM giving his location and destination as AUS (Austin airport) 15:29 Tower advises 711YM to expect runway 17L (left). YM confirms transmission. 14:06 Mode C comment 14:44 Tower eventually has 711YM (1YM) contact Austin approach 15:41 Altitude/runway comments 19:10 1YM is 13/15 (unclear) miles out. Verify runway 17L and vector to runway given. 21:03 1YM pilot possibly mentions runway 17L 22:56 Tower questions if 1YM is on final approach course for runway 17L. 1YM verifies runway 17L 23:02 Tower tells another aircraft that 1YM is correcting for runway 17L. I am wondering if this and the previous transmission imply that 1YM was lined up on the wrong runway (17R?) 27:24 "YM Tower" Initially I thought this was "YM down" but it may be the tower calling to check status of 1YM. 31:10 Mention possibly by another aircraft about smoke relative to runway 17L |
