The radio dramas have a scene where Leia is giving R2 the plans and tells him they have to be delivered to Obi-Wan Kenobi at all costs. She also turns off his self preservation program. In the radio version of the Jawa scene 3PO tells R2 to get in line stop modifying that other unit. So R2 sabotaged the R5 unit, but was under instructions from the Princess to do whatever it takes. View Quote "Sabotaged?" They're sentient beings capable of feeling and thinking as demonstrated throughout the films. R2 fucking murdered another droid because of his mission of trying to overthrow a duly elected government and restore an oppressive monarchy. (boring parliamentary debates were what the prequels were about, right?) He spent his formative years killing separatists who just didn't want to be oppressed by the fundamentalist zealot jedis and their so-called republic, then when the empire he helped create was democratically formed, he decided he'd switch sides and fight for whoever created the most mayhem. Industrial Automation has some sick, sick people working there to make a droid like that. |

Thanks to an r5 unit with a bad motivator r2 was able to help the alliance R5D4 was murdered by R2D2 purely because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Likely true, considering R2 units are know to fire first...just ask Jabba's pet. While 3P0 sits there like a dick having his eye eaten out, R2 lets out an electric mag dump on the little creatures ass. |

Not sure, but he was kind of an asshole. He knew who Luke's father was the whole time and didn't tell him. Total dick move.

R2D2 was one of the astromech droids on the Naboo Queen's ship. He was the droid that repaired the ship when Padme, Qui Gon Jinn, and Obi Wan Kenobi escaped Naboo in Episode 1.
Later in Episode 2, after they were married, Padme gave Anakin R2D2 as a wedding gift, and he gave her C3PO.

With a R2 you can do anything. C3PO is just annoying in over 6 million languages. |

Quoted: So when Qui-Gon and Obi-Won arrive on the Trader ship, in the first movie, R2D2 is with them. We see where and how C3P0 come from in the course of the movie but where did R2D2 come from? He seems to have been around and in the service of the Jedi for a long time when the movie starts. View Quote From an assembly line made by the company Industrial Automation. Industrial Automaton (IA) was one of the two primary droid manufacturers in the galaxy, the other being Cybot Galactica. IA was a company specializing in droids for all trades and walks of life. Its most popular products were the R-series astromech droids, in particular the versatile R2-series.

R2 units are standard issue astromech droids used on the Xwing fighter How Anakin got one before the x wing was avail is a good question. I'm not sure if they were used on the headhunters in the books or not. View Quote |

R2D2 was not in the service of the Jedi. He was in the service of Queen Amadala. He was the only droid left who was repairing the queens ship when she was running the blockade in Episode 1. As to where he came from I would assume an actual droid making corporation along with probably the R-series droids as they all have the same basic look to them.
As for Kurosawa the movie was "The Hidden Fortress" and the two "clowns" in the story were the droid characters. |
