I'm upgrading my mid-sized Dodge Dakota soon to a full sized truck and wanted opinions. My requirements are:
4x4 Biggest cab available Good gas mileage The truck will be mainly used as a family transport; towing, hauling, power not as important. Good gas mileage (thus the ecoboost) and reliability is a huge plus. Surprisingly, after adding the features from each website that I wanted to my selected (fairly basic model), the Tundra was a little cheaper at 39k vs Ford at 41.5k. Let me know if you have experience with ether. Poll inbound. ETA: I realize some may have a problem specifically w/ Ecoboost, so I put a V8 F-150 as an option. |

Nothing says "Let's blow one another and have butt sex in the bed of my Toyota Tundra" like a Toyota Tundra.

I'm a Toyota fanboy, so you know what I voted for. Thought the V6 eco boost trucks have decent power.
|
|
i've always been a chevy guy.
my next truck will likely be a toyota. followed closely by the v8 f150...... the only thing i don't like about ford trucks is (and i know a good number of guys who own them, different year models) i've never been in one and said to myself, "damn this truck feels good." |

I own a 2012 FX4 with Ecoboost and 3.73 rear gearing. It's a fricking hoot to drive. Bone stock it's a 14.8 truck in the 1/4mile.
The Tundra is a good truck, too, though. If I didn't have the Ford, I'd get a Tundra. |
|
Either one of the Fords by far.
I voted EcoBoost but the V8 would also be nice. |
|
My hunting buddy bought an Ecoboost the same week I bought a Tundra (both 14's) and he tells me every time we're together that he wishes he would have gone with a Tundra. There's more room in the Crewmax than you could possibly imagine and the ride is great!
|
|
not sure what kind of issues people have with the ecoboost. In to find out more on this matter. |

I get about 16 around town in my '13 ecoboost. And I drive like a little old lady. But I love it. FX2 btw.
|
|
Coming from a Ford salesman get the ecoboost. Yes, towing you will lose some mileage but just driving around town it will be way better than anything Toyota puts out. I looked at a toyota sticker today and the truck I was competing against had a 3.90 rear end. No wonder they say they can tow alot. And from what I remember if you get the 5.7 and trailer tow that truck has a 4.10 rear. Say hello to 12mpg empty. Plus Ford crew cab is huge. In 09 I think they added 6 inches to the cab. There is a reason ford sells 500,000 trucks or more a year and Toyota sells around 150,000,

I think I averaged about 14-15 before the lift and tire upgrade. Now I am around 12mpg.. Tundra tows like a dream but the payload could be higher. (I have hauled 1ton without any issues but the payload is around 1500 I believe.) Recently chose a tundra over an f-150. I'm very happy with my decision.
|
|
I voted Ecoboost.
Love it. Honestly all of them are nice these days, the Toy's feel flimsy as hell to me though, I know they are good trucks though. |
|
I bought a '14 Crewmax Tundra about 3 weeks ago. I came from 12 years of Ford ownership. I am loving it so far. I have been averaging about 16.5 on the 5.7 with my fair share of putting my foot in to blast by the left lane campers.
ETA: There is way more room in my Tundra than my Supercrew had. |

Ecoboost all day. The thing pulls like a train, acceleration is awesome. I like the looks of the tundra, but in the end the F150 lariat was so much nicer, and it just flies. The heated and cooled leather seats, the backup camera, the built in trailer brake, and electronic sway control, power rear slider & moonroof all helped sell it for me. I bought it off a Toyota lot! As mentioned before, that Turbo whistle is awesome. http://i60.tinypic.com/246kj5x.jpg http://i61.tinypic.com/15dqc7a.jpg View Quote that is a damn fine looking truck. |

The Tundra crew cab is huge and has reclining power rear seats. (I have a double cab because I use the bed space) They don't just say they can tow a lot. They can. |

Are you planning on keeping the truck for a long time?
Which engine do you believe will be more trouble free in the long run, the twin turbo charged v6 produced by Ford or the naturally aspirated v8 produced by Toyota? |

That tundra will be running long after that ecoboost takes a shit, which likely will happen sooner than you think. Those engine are pieces of shit. I know a rebuilder that is backed up for months due to those.

I'm not saying they can't tow alot. They can tow just as much as a Ford truck will. What I am saying is that with a 4.10 rear they should. Ford truck with 3.55 can tow just as much as the toyota and actually get some decent mileage when you aren't towing. Ford truck with Ecoboost and 3.31 rear end can still tow something like 9200 pounds and get WAY better mileage than the toyota will.

Buy a diesel. You'll want a bigger truck eventually anyway, and the MPG on a modern diesel is far better than any modern gasser.

I went through this in November. It all boiled down to long term costs, reliability and rear passenger leg room. I bought the Tundra Crewmax 5.7 TRD.

How does Consumer Report rate them? That's pretty much how I buy vehicles. Plus, actually going down and sitting in them, driving them, etc.

Is 41.5k the sticker price or actual? If that's sticker, you can probably buy that truck for 33k.

As far as MPG with the Ecoboost, I have two trip meters. One has been going for 20,000 miles and the other for the past 1,200 miles.
Trip A: 16.6mpg Trip B: 18.4mpg I drive it pretty hard. Lots of wide-open-throttle from red lights. |

TUNDRA!....if you want an overpriced under equipped POS. Otherwise take the Ford and enjoy your truck and the money in your wallet...

Which engine do you believe will be more trouble free in the long run, the twin turbo charged v6 produced by Ford or the naturally aspirated v8 produced by Toyota? Yes, I will have it for a long time hopefully. And it will be a low mileage vehicle, so I concerned more for things that hold up over time as opposed to miles. I'm looking at maybe 6k miles a year. Neither...
Recently I wanted a truck. Then I had to do an errand for my boss in his Eco Boost F150. I had to fill the gas tank up. $124.00 and two swipes later it was full. That cured my truck fever. |

Can't comment about the Tundra, never driven one. The 5.0 F150 gave me a perma grin when I drove one. But knew I'd get 2mpg with it because It would be matted most of the time so I could listen to the exhaust. The eco just moved more effortlessly and I love the turbo whistle. View Quote Yeah? How about you get to 133k like I am at and tell me what's wrong. I've got a 4wd engagement problem that the shop can't fix and something wrong with the cam chain tensioners in addition to variable valve timing problems that are going to cost about $3,000 to fix. Your truck is newer than mine, but that just means people haven't discovered the flaws in the ecoboost engine yet. I'll never own another Ford after my experience-there are known problems with my truck that should have been recalled . My boss has an F150 that is a year newer than mine and he also has a 4wd problem like I do-it's trying to engage all the time. I'd say get the Toyota, My Dad did and he's happy a pig in shit. |

Tundra has plenty of room and the back seats are more reclined than the F150. See my remarks in this thread Tundra thread One thing I learned in my quest is that the manufacturers can fudge any of those numbers by changing their point of reference, whether its GVW, towing capacity, etc. |

I almost bought a F150 XLT Ecoboost Supercrew 4x4 a few months ago. Several dealers around here had them marked down to 32-34k with all the cash back, trade allowance, etc. They all stickered around 40-42k.
If you can't find those deals locally, I'd really suggest shopping southern dealerships, or waiting for the incentives to come back. I don't know if Toyota has deals like that or not. |
