Wow, that would be great for some end of the world type movie.

See I wouldn't associate that sound with imminent danger. I'd associate that with some annoying jackass pulling a prank.

Sounds like a lot of echo and one of those old Cold War sirens that rotates at about 4 or 5 rpm. We had one of those sirens where I grew up and even with no tall buildings to echo off of it sounded like that. With the echo from the buildings I'm sure it added to the rising and fading of the sound level, plus the high/low tones added in.
I know the first time I heard the one back home I was taken aback over how it sounded. eta: That was a Federal Signals Thunderbolt model siren. Here's a couple of videos showing how it rotates and the different type of tones. eta again. first vid won't play embedded, so here's I-potato link to see it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoAznrsESGI |

They needed people to be able to hear it over all the gunshots.

I wouldn't have known what the fuck that was if I was there.
Everyone knows what an air raid siren sound like. Why change it? |
|
Actually that is very cool. I could stand outside all day and listen to it.
It is like the end of the world. ETA: as a musician, on the upswing, it is almost in sync. As a law abiding citizen, I want to see a funnel cloud. |

As someone posted above, it sounds like echos off buildings causing that weird sound.

The sirens at the oil and gas refineries around here are creepy as hell too. 1st Wednesday of every month at noon sounds like Armageddon.

The volunteer fire department I started out at in my little home town had a small siren to alert for fire calls and storms. It died one summer so we installed a Federal 3T22 like the one in the video below that we got refurbished from a nuclear power plant. After it was installed and wired up we were giving it a paint job when one of the assclowns in the dept decided it would be funny to pull the ladder down off the side of the building and kick the siren on. There wasn't much of anywhere to go but right underneath it to avoid every last Db. I ran for a full cycle (3 mins) and I swear it's part of the reason I have tinnitus today. That was a long 3 mins with my hands over my ears waiting for them to start bleeding. A certain person got a dead skunk dropped into the cab of his pickup a few weeks later. Fuck him.

It isn't the tall buildings or echoing -- that is how that model sounds. Another Federal Signal product -- made in University Park, IL. They have an awesome anechoic chamber inside their facility (full walk-in) to test with. |

Whoever came up with that shit and approved it for deployment had to be tripping on fucking acid. NO FUCKING WAY anybody in their right mind would have come up with it otherwise. It's so patently obnoxious and goofy.

This is now a warning siren thread?
Heres the one in my home town. It's about a 1/4 mile from my house, goes off at noon and 9pm everyday. And is used by the fire dept also. I grew up with this sound and love it. I videoed it for posterity before some fuck head gets it shut down one day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyhYn5V-uT0 |
