Quoted: What do you call it when you mix slugs and buck? That's a fun one. View Quote the 00 buck is supposed to be first so you get some wounds to distract the bear from eating you and then you can use the aimed slug to break them down, repeat as needed Some years ago my buddies were at Lake Illiamna fishing and had a bear destroy their camp during the day, then it came back. They had a 12ga and a 44mag, the shotgun was loaded with alternating 00/slug. The bear soaked up the 44mag and 00 buck with little visible effect but the slugs "stopped" the bear, breaking major bones while doing so. Eleven rounds altogether to put it down.

Eh, the truth is that a pistol is most likely to end up in my hands if something goes wrong at night.
If I were to have advance notice--I'd have the rifle. I really don't want to see what happens to my ears if I pull the trigger on a rifle inside my home though. Ugh. Better than dead, but damn. |

1) Suppressed SBR by the bed. 2) Pistol on the night stand for back up 3) 12g Pump in the closet as a last ditch |

I don't over think this shit nearly as much as some. Either will be plenty potent more times than not. |

Get both. Load your 12 ga with slugs and then fill the barrel with 5.56 rounds. Everybody is happy.

870 with a Surfire forend. First two rounds are #4 buck and the next 5 are 00 buck. My biggest threat right now is a four legged critter getting into the chicken coop. Depending on the two legged critter threat I can either send two rounds of #4 buck down range and then I'm onto 00 buck or if I have the time and distance I can also remove the two #4 bucks and replace with 00 buck from the side saddle.

For those of you using an AR (which I do too), would there be any hearing damage from shooting a bad guy inside your homes? I accidentally shot one round outside in an open field the other day without putting my ears back on (you only make that mistake once ), and it had me ringing for a little bit. I can't imagine how bad it would be indoors where it's more confined. Would adrenaline take over and you not even notice it, or could the noise and pressure actually cause any harm to your ears?

Optics are not that important at inside the room distances. Some people believe that if you do not have all the bells and whistles on your AR it is worthless. My 11 years in the army was iron sights until right at the end and I'm very comfortable with that. Optics were a great step up but still not required at distances in side the average house. |

As a runner it is easier to dodge a single 5.56mm projectile than it is to dodge 13 OO Buck balls coming at you.
Shotgun has more coverage. 12 ga shotgun, 3" chamber, 00 Buck It's foolish to argue any long arm is better than a shotgun for home defense. Shotgun wins on every point. But I digress this is an AR15 forum so the Mall Ninja and Keyboard Commandos will be biased due to lack of knowledge! |

No, you can put 41 .24 caliber holes in something with one shot, most of which won't be deep enough to reliably stop a threat. It's called "not the best tool for the job". The shotgun will work for defensive use (ditch the turkey loads and get real ammo though), but the autoloading rifle is better suited to the task. |
