Sniper Grey, Burnt Bronze, any of the Magpul Colors, Patriot Brown...

It helps to offset them with Graphite Black 2-tone jobs.

It's less the colors and more the people doing the coating. I've seen some great jobs and some astoundingly shitty jobs in the same colors.

Does Cerakote cover imperfections and machine/tool marks?  I have a lower that I'd like to have coated and am not sure how much prep is needed.

Well, I guess that is your opinion.

Almost all of the best cerakote jobs I have ever seen were Burnt Bronze. Incredible color, and very popular. My personal favorite cerakote color is Tungsten Grey.

I've seen various vids about coatings.  Do you believe Cerakote can be done by anyone?  I've read that prep can be a pain.

Is there another coating as durable that requires less prep and setup?

Duracoat is easier for DIY but goes on thick and can affect tolerances. Cerakote is best coat.

I'm not the finish-master, so I will have to suggest doing research, sorry.

Backstory: I had my Sig P226 cerakoted and it was showing wear after the holster presentations (from a good Kydex holster) after a one weekend shooting class. Sure we did a lot of presentations, but I was shocked when I cleaned the gun, that the high/sharper corners on the gun were already wearing. This was probably 6 years ago, don't know if they've improved the formulation since.

Gun still looks good (no pics handy, sorry) but cerakote has not worn as well as I'd like to report. It was properly applied by a very good, experienced local company, so I'm not going to blame them.

I am planning to grab a few different colors and fire up the kiln. Outdoor gun cooking keeps MrsDash happy. The prep is the only part Im not too excited about.

Someone can probably sand blast it off.

The receiver color is Sig Dark Grey. I asked the guy to try and get just the slightest green. Turned out pretty good.

FWIW, there is a guy in Sig Forum who does the actual Iaflon (related to Teflon) coating that goes on Swiss SAN Sigs.

WTCLEGUNSMITH

He was asked repeatedly about the paint, he wasn't actively soliciting jobs.

It's not a constant-use gun for me so it's not much more worn than it got after the class. It was part of my carry gun progression - I had been carrying a Para Ordnance .45 (ugh), got the 226, moved over to 1911s for a bit, then got over my concern about polymer framed guns and picked up M&P9s, which I carry to this day.
