Shaky start.  Courtois played very well, putting Cech on the back-burner for good I think.  Diego Costa provides an offensive threat up top that was non-existent last campaign.

Rooney needs to hurry up and score.  My fantasy team needs the points.

I can't decide how I feel about Man U. sucking it up again this season.  I don't despise them the way I do Chelsea or maybe Man City (who I dream of seeing out of the top 4), so though I'd like to see them ending behind Liverpool again it's sad to see them struggle so greatly.  It's like seeing a nemesis no longer able to compete.  Kind of pathetic and depressing...

With the Angel di Maria transfer, I am left wondering where we are going to play him?

Is van Gaal scrapping the back 3 already in exchange for a 4-3-3?

If van Gaal is smart, he'll sit Fletcher, aka Mr. Give-the-ball-away-cheaply.

True, but that would put a winger taking the role of a center mid.

Granted, di Maria was pushed back into the middle 3 at Madrid by Bale and Ronaldo... But we don't have anyone with pace like that.

Set Rooney in that role maybe?  Didn't both Ferguson and Moyes use him like that (and effectively, iirc) a few times in the last couple of years?

Rooney has been used as a playmaker in the last couple of years, especially since the acquisition of van Persie... Sir Alex and Moyes both were running a 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 with van Persie as the lone striker.

BUT... The major problem is what van Gaal has said all summer. United have too many players at the same forward positions. Rooney can play striker or CAM, but Juan Mata is a true CAM.

United's roster under Moyes went all kinds of

That's for sure.

Point remains that MU's midfield is all sorts of bad.  Cleverly has no imagination, seems to out of position a lot, is always running back toward his goal chasing a man that got by him.  Fletcher no longer has any pace, stamina, or touch (or so it seems from first two games).

Good. Let ManU keep throwing money away on the offensive side. As long as they don't reinforce their defense it won't matter much.

They spent ~65 million so far on the defense (Rojo and Shaw), it'll be interesting to see the results of that.

Suarez had a great work ethic, was great at uniting the team on and off the field, and is overall a good guy by accounts from his former coach and teammates.  He brought no drama outside of the biting (as ridiculous as that sounds).
All the great ones are a little nuts.

Balotelli is just a b****.  Hopefully I'll be eating my words by boxing day, but I don't see it.

Followed up immediately by an impressive 4-0 loss to MK Dons.

ETA:  Who the fuck is MK Dons, you might ask.  Is that some top tier Ukranian club they're playing in the Champions League?

No.  It's a 3rd tier English club that didn't exist before 2004.

Champions League draws are out.  Chelsea drew Schalke 04, Sporting Lisbon and Maribor.  Looks manageable...knock on wood.

United's spent £172,000,000 million on players so far this year to [maybe] be competitive again.

i had thought, and maybe secretly wanted, that he would come back to LFC and accordingly Lucas would be on his way.
Alonso has hella UEFA CL experience, including a pair of winner's medals, and would have been a good mentor to guide some of the children on the current LFC squad.
but he will do well with Bayern, he will stay in that sitting-in role and it will tidy them up when the going gets tough during the business end of the CL knockout stage.

My read is Man City has the toughest group (E) of the BPL teams.

Group F is probably the next toughest.

I'd say Liverpool's (B) and Arsenal's (D) are about equal though Arsenal is stuck going to Turkey again.

Chelsea (G) is easily the class of their group.

Does anyone know if the BPL and the FA have loosened their policy on re-scheduling league fixtures to accomodate increased recovery time after CL matches?  I know all the other national associations are very generous in this way which has traditionally been a disadvantage for BPL sides.

That's my team, but I just don't see them doing well this year.

Unfortunately, I think Rooney is at the end of his usefulness, and they have no midfield.
