I started waking up with moderate - severe joint pain in my knees, ankles, wrists, and elbows presenting about 6-8 months ago. It usually disappears after showering and getting dressed, but returns to a lesser degree if I sit in the same position for more than 30 minutes.  I've also had a pretty serious diet Dr Pepper addiction for the past year, averaging 6-9 cans a day.  It just dawned on me there may be a correlation between the two. Has anybody else experienced this? I'm scheduled for a physical soon and plan to request CBC and chem panel.

Do you happen to also take acid blockers for heart burn like Prilosec?

I know from experiece that PPI's can induce joint pain.

For real - that's a shit load of soda.  Switch to something healthier, like water, coffee, and beer.

Yea it is..  my girl can't have any of the fake sugar crap she gets very ill.

artificial sugar

Drink lots of water or if you need a soda try to sty to the clear ones and dont do diet Carbonated water gives a soda like feel if you don't mind the taste

I don't have any input on soda and joint pain.
But I have switched from soda with all the chemicals to True Lemon water flavoring packets.
I find that True Lemon water flavoring tastes really good and it doesn't have any of those nasty chemicals in it, it's not carbonated but that's easily taken care of if you want to get a carbonator.

6-9 cans a day habit?, you'll be lucky if your body ever recovers.

I gave up diet pepsi cold turkey.  If definitely was causing headaches.

I Drink a lot of generic club soda these days.

Yeah, quit drinking soda, it ain't good for you in those quantities. BTDT.

Try ice water with a squirt of lemon juice or pomegranate juice instead.

Tastes good and is way cheaper than soda.

Your body will thank you later.

FUCKING HELL OP!

NO ONE SHOULD DRINK EVEN 3 CANS OF SODA A DAY.

first of all, soda is salty and you are keeping youself in a state of chronic dehydration

second, for the body to process the carbolic acid in pop it can sometimes have to strip calium out of your bones.

thirdly, aspertame can NOT be metabolized by the body.  that is why there are no calories, bc the bodg cant break it down into fuel or otherwise process it.  therefore it accumulates i the fatty tissues of the body.  thing rhat accumulate in high concentrations often cause cancer or chronic problems.  im not making the claim that it causes cancer, or that you will get it but you ought glconsider whether constant excessive may have a steep price down the road.   there have been scientific studies regarding aspertame and cancer...google them and see.  i do recall that the story of how it was approved for human use is to say the least...weird and controversial, with themes of corruption.  interesstingly, don rumsfield was an executive for that co when it got pushed through in spite of objections of some fda researchers iirc.    im not too paranoid about it, hell i chew sugarfree gum sometimes but it is a little contriversial at least in spite of fda approval

also, diet soda throws the endocrine system for a loop.  it causes the body to produce insulin for suger it thinks it is seeing which makes blood sugars drop and actually increases appetite to bring blood sugar levels back up.  this just plays hell with diabetics or people with hypoglycemia.  it really isnt a good alternative to regular soda.

Try taking a 3 week break from Prilosec and see if the symptoms go away.

I cycle my Prilosec (three weeks on, two weeks off) because my hand joints swell up after only taking it for a week or two. I couldn't imagine how bad I would feel if I took it for 6 months straight.

While I don't drink that much, I do drink Diet Dr Pepper daily.

I've had a sore shoulder for the last couple of months.

Hmmm.  Maybe I'll give it up for a week or so and see if there are any changes.

Strange...or perhaps just an odd coincidence.

I quit drinking soda about a year ago. I only drink water, tea or real lemonade. I feel tons better, and the heat doesn't affect me as much.

When I drink a soda now, I get the squirts!  no more sodas for me.........

Not only aspartame, but diet sodas are loaded with sodium. Lots of sodium will bloat you, this is probably what added to the OP's joint pain.

I used to be a Diet Coke fiend, I drank 3 or more of the 20 ounce size a day. Gave them up and went with water, black coffee or unsweetened iced tea. I feel MUCH better and lost a lot of weight.

If you have to have something fizzy, drink seltzer or tonic water with a wedge of lime or lemon in it. Give the wedge a twist to release the oils.

Aspartame has been linked to those symptoms.  I used to drink a 2 liter bottle of diet coke every day, and was having the same sort of all over pain.  Read an article about aspartame, was horrified, stopped immediately.  2 weeks later the pain was gone.
Google up 'health risks aspartame" and find a list of the things that it can cause.  Fibromialgia is listed, which is all over pain.

I have RA. Take Enbrel for it. I switched to diet sodas as part of my weight loss regime and noticed that I my joint pain seemed to be worse in the morning and stayed with me progressively longer in the mornings. Quit drinking sodas all together to help my wife quit drinking sodas. Joint pain intensity and duration dropped back off relatively quickly. Just my experience.

Yeah, I was worried that True Lemon was just going to be "another flavor of the day" so to speak.

It worked.  The soreness in the shoulder is absolutely gone.

Previous to this, it would increase and decrease, but for the first time in a long time - there is no pain or stiffness at all.

Just checked - this has been going on for around three months.

Cut out soda completely and it's gone.

Regular soda is cancer food and its still less likely to give you cancer the diet soda.  Yes - your joint pain and any other issues is related to your crap diet.

Eat vegetables, almonds, drink water, take fish oil, folic acid and vit D3.  = enjoy life

I drank a shitton of soda up until age 18, then I quit cold turkey. I lost a bunch of weight and felt better all the time. It's definitely worth it.

Unfortunately, I relapsed . It started after I turned 21. My go-to drink is cheap whisky and Coke, which meant I had a 2 liter of Coke in the fridge most of the time. What started as a couple whisky/Cokes on the weekend turned into having a glass of straight Coke a couple times a day . I'm working on getting off of it again, I'll buy better whiskey and take it neat from now on .

I wonder if it is from the acids in the drinks.  not necessarily the aspartame or other artificial sweeteners.  I have had the same experiences with energy drinks.

Diet DP has these three acids in them, and I bet after 6-9 a day it adds up.  Citric, Phosphoric, Malic.
