So, we have a duty to leave No Man Behind... and we will violate our policy against negotiating with terrorists without apology ... except for the past 5 years that we had already agreed to the terms and left him behind, until he gets a cold ...or looks tired, maybe drugged ... five months ago...and then we act without consulting Congress because it suddenly is our duty to protect him ...not because we Leave No Man Behind, but because his health was immediately at stake ....five months ago.

So, if you are healthy and doing well, we'll leave you behind. kinda, sorts ... maybe?

NOTE to All Future Captives:  Catch a cold, or look really tired, or drugged... or we will leave you behind...for five years... more or less, kinda, until you look sick, and then we'll wait a while longer, and then By God we will act on our Duty to Leave No Man Behind!

Of course, but ... I was only explaining the 'Official' position without adding in the deserter/traitor issue.

At face value, my post is the White House's story about their actions.

It's a lie, wrapped in an enigma, cloaked in a broken law, surrounded by mistruths, covered in sacred duties, supported by health concerns, forsaking all others, and best described as Most Transparent Administration in History.

Got it?

Another Obama talking head today claimed that the 'immediate concerns for his health, so we had to act now...without consulting Congress is NOT because of his immediate health issues (since that 'immediate issue' was actually five months ago) was a 'health issue' that was the result of the Taliban claiming "We'll kill him if you tell anyone we are making this trade."

She said this with a straight face.

They acted Right Fucking Now because the Taliban claimed they would kill Bergdahl if anyone found out about the deal....

This SAME fucking deal that Congress has KNOWN about for the last five years as 'on the table' from the Taliban.

And nobody is taking them straight to task over this web of nonsense.

Newest spin on this is that Bergdahl and his family are actually part of a super-secret espionage operation, that he allowed himself to be captured so that he could gain valuable intel on the Taliban, infiltrate their ranks and make important contacts with inside-agents within Taliban. The family is posing as Taliban-sympathizers to keep up the rouse.

The "deserter-story" is just a cover for him and this has been planned for many many years.

It was all part of the operation - and the dead soldiers who were killed searching for him were,  unfortunately, sacrificed like decoy units who are killed like in distraction operations that occur in every war.

I shit you not - this is what is being "whispered" now.

This can't be all of it, what else is going on? Why would the administration trade away those five if there wasn't something else they thought they were going to get out of it instead of at best a deserter, at worst a traitor? This administration is not replete with geniuses, but they aren't exactly stupid either.

It isn't all of it.

I heard a report that what is really going on is that Obama is unilaterally declaring the Global War on Terror over and they used the demands from the Talibs to start this back in December. The Talibs demanded we limit operations in Afghanistan, stop drone strikes, and start releasing Guantanamo prisoners for Bergdal. We have done all of these things and there hasn't even been a drone strike since December 25th last year!

Remember the big terrorist meeting a few months back and all the questions of why we didn't know about it and attack? Well, now you know why.

Obama is surrendering to his bros.

Actually, no.  That is a myth that has no bearing in fact.

Benedict Arnold was a traitor. He died peacefully in London.  Never was retrieved or punished.  We left him behind.

Google the "St Patrick's Battalion"....  American soldiers that deserted and fought for the Mexicans in the Mexican War, 1846-48.  They were captured, tried, and shot or hung for desertion outside of Chapultepec.

Estimates of desertion in the European Theater of Operations in World War II run as high as 20,000.  Did the Big Red One come off the line and go searching for deserters? No.

What about the deserters from the Vietnam war still in Canada?   We doing Air Assaults into Calgary now? I don't think we are.

Anwar Al-Awlaki was an American citizen in Al Qaeda. We killed that guy with a hellfire missile.  Left his component molecules behind in the desert.

I have personally seen soldiers go AWOL and after a year, IIRC, they are called for desertion and dropped from rolls. End of story.

Which begs another question.  If a quick 15-6 was conducted after Bergdahl deserted, it seems like it would have been justifiable for GEN McChrystal or whomever to have stopped the search a week in.   We should have searched for him with CAS and that is about it.  We could have always decided to stop looking and focus on the mission.  The idea that you find the man first and then conduct an investigation is ridiculous.  The whole mission in Afghanistan in RC-E was flipped on its head for weeks for this guy.  Who decided that?

Don't forget COP Keating was denied UAV reconnaissance support during the Bergdahl search...then they got overrun.  At what point should the dogs been called off?

Anyway, the facts, historical facts, is that "no man left behind" is a nice saying but it has not applied to deserters.

I wasn't speaking technically.  This is GD.

Normally you defeat an adversarial country and, once the fight is over, you repatriate the POWs to the adversary country.

Except we never declared the fight over, precisely because it would have required repatriation of those dudes we captured early on in Afghanistan and deemed POWs.

So we forced ourselves to continue treating captured Taliban as POWs, if we even capture Taliban anymore. I have no idea. That well may have run dry.

Of course a SOFA may have changed this. But I do know that one of the five we gave up for Bergdahl were captured in 2002. But he was held at Gitmo, and did not receive POW status.
View Quote

You don't repatriate POWs to an adversary. You repatriate them to their protective power. That may, or may not, be the same entity to either the protective power or the detainee. All five of these guys were Afghan citizens, and the actions of releasing them is troubling on many levels,
not the least of which is level of recognition it lends to the Taliban, which we don't recognize vs. the GIRoA, whom we do and who should be these detainees protective power.

It was like no international attorney did the first due diligence in this regard, IMO.

We didn't declare the fight over because, strangely enough, it isn't over.

I don't know how you can make a connection to COP Keating and Bergdahl. They were 3 months apart and two separate units and AOs altogether. By October 2009 much of the search for Bergdahl had shifted to passive HUMINT and SIGINT collection with minimal diversion of ISR assets to support any hits or tips.

Keating was its own fuck up from the start.

'They' also have the idea in their heads that the Army is killing babies and burning villages.  'We support our troops!' is a mantra, but it does NOT mean 'We support the Army!'

In their minds, Bergdahl left a corrupt organization after he saw atrocities.  His departure was 'with honor and distinction'...

meh fox news needs to get on their vetting ad accuracy people. Berdgahl's former PL is dead. Got killed looking for his dumb ass. Also there are ZERO E-5 Platoon Leaders. When they post stupid inaccurate shit they instantly lack any credibility in my book regardless of the rest of the content is.
