The U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan confirmed Thursday that three American doctors were killed by an Afghan security guard who opened fire at a Kabul hospital. The shooting at Cure International Hospital in the western part of the Afghan capital was the latest attack on foreign civilians in the city this year. "With great sadness we confirm that three Americans were killed in the attack at CURE Hospital," said a statement posted on the Embassy's Twitter page. "No other information will be released at this time." <Continued in link> They are doing Gods work. But I don't understand going to a country where they HATE you. Lots of other poor countries need doctors too. |

Prayers out. This green on blue shit is what really pisses me off about that place. I spent 15 months there, and most of what I have to say about every single one of the Afghans I have met is not COC compliant.

you cannot force American style democracy on a society that does not have the moral and philosophical culture to support it.
I said that back in 2002 when we started nation building in Iraq. The best we can do with places like that is kick the hell out of them when they threaten us and destroy their ability to make good on their threats. They have to manage their own society. It's foolish for us to try and do it for them. |

When the cops show up, people cooperate. When they leave, back to whatever it is they were doing.
That bunch is the same way. They just have more stuff thanks to the tax payer. FSA, IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN. |

The article says the attacker was wounded. Hopefully he dies a slow, painful death, because there are no doctors to treat his wounds

Any CoC compliant particulars you would like to share? There were a couple of incidents where there was treachery in the "green" ranks which could have resulted in my or my teammates death. Both were caught and taken into custody before they could do their work. I can't be any more detailed due to where I was working. I haven't begun to mention their proclivity for violating children and farm animals, doing opium and worse, poor hygiene, the way they treat women, and general untrustworthiness whenever someone other than their immediate family is involved. Every interaction I had with any Afghan, they were trying to get one over on me. Either by getting out of work, trying to get information they shouldn't have, overcharging, or outright stealing. The only guy who I had any respect for, and still didn't trust at all, was an elderly man who cleaned the shitters. I had to escort him while he did his job. He was always eager to do his work, and to treat us with deference, but he was still always trying to get away with something. |

Alexander the Greek and Darius had their troubles with them. I expect they'll never adapt. They expect the world to adapt to them. If we walled them off and left them alone, they'd just go back to killing each other. If they just stayed there and did it, that would be fine with me. The problem is, they genuinely believe that we are evil for not being Muslim and guiding our culture by the Quran. |

If you want to really understand the people, country and mindset, get a book titled "Afghanistan". Believe it is written by a guy named Tanner. It goes back to pre Alexander, to present day and will open your eyes on why the people there are the way they are. You will not change them anytime soon. |
|
[#36]
Kill the people that are trying to help you and then blame everybody but yourself for your problems.
I think the only thing that would change that country would be decades of eighteenth-century style imperialism combined with a massive international effort or an Ataturk-style strongman who could drag them kicking and screaming into the modern world. |

Sadly it didn't take a fraction of the 33 months spent there to see that there is no hope of change, because they do not want change. They want what they can get from you, and then to return to whatever they were doing. I'm sure there are a few who aren't all bad, but I never met one who was all good. As kpel said they are always looking to get something out of you or over on you. Sketchy doesn't begin to describe it. When we had to start building compounds within the FOBs/COBs/SHs because we couldn't count on the ANA/ANP/ALP/etc ad nausem to not shoot people in the back, or while sleeping the answer should have instead been to raze that place to the ground and roll out. |

Not saying it is any less tragic, but these doctors were not servicemembers, nor were they employed by the US Gov't. They were there voluntarily. While I think their cause is noble, going into a country full of people that hate you, regardless of why you are there, is just dumb.
EDIT: Reading up on the hospital and the charity organization they work for, seems it is as much a missionary type venture as a hospital. |
