I hate being the guy who actually AGREES with POTUS and Holder, but keeping all these non-violent, low level drug offenders in jail is just plain stupid, an affront to liberty, and costing the taxpayer billions.
Understand, a lot of these folks are in prison on mandatory minimum sentences, which ARF hates. A lot of these folks are serving sentences that are LONGER than if they were convicted of the same crime today. A lot of these folks are in prison on non-violent, white collar felonies, that shouldn't be felonies at all. |

They aren't going to release 200,000 prisoners. The inmates have to meet certain criteria (have done 10 years of sentence, clear disciplinary record, certain drug crimes, no gang or cartel affiliations, etc) and file a request for release. I'm all for it on certain drug sentences with no violence.
I used to go up to parole hearings for a few inmates in the federal system who never had problems or kept out of trouble for several years, one was a Cuban refugee who straightened his act up after I came down hard on him for about a year. I ran into him and a couple others all working together in construction on the street once they got out, they never went back in over 10 years. One was doing a 25 year sentence for dealing weed, he was busted a decade after he stopped dealing after selling some vacant land to someone who got busted. Every staff member in the prison said he got a raw deal. Never got in trouble, worked outside the prison, a staff member went to law school, took his case on appeal and got his conviction overturned after he did 15 years. |

Hate to burst everyone's bubble, but the Constitution gives the president the authority to pardon anyone who has been convicted of a federal law, regardless of what the jury says. The only exception is if that person has been impeached by Congress:

That same presidential power of pardon could be used by President Rand Paul to restore the Second Amendment rights to any gun owner convicted of a DV misdemeanor or a non-violent felony. Which would probably number several times more than 200,000. |
