I was down at my mailbox and ran into the rancher around the corner from me. I knew he was a Marine in the Pacific. He once he had told me there were 5,000 crosses on the beach where he was at. Today I mentioned his cap and he told me he was now the last survivor of Iwo Jima. Pretty remarkable if true. This guy is the salt of the earth and I'm proud to have him as my neighbor.

Yeah, no.

My grandpa is still alive and he was one of the first to land.

Next time you see him, tell him that I have some great news. He is not the last Iwo survivor.

He's probably getting close, in the grand scheme of things.

If he was really there, hard to hold it against him if his mind is starting to go.

I did not want to press the guy, as it seems like there would be more. He may have been talking about his group.  I also found an article on google written last month with another survivor. Thank your grandfather for his service.

It's possible that he really believes he is.  Whether it would make him happy or not, to know he's not the last, who knows?

His son lives across the road from me, I'll ask him. I'm sure he's the real deal as far as his service,  just not sure what "The last of" he is.

Maybe of his group. I have an old friend in his mid 80's that has told me many stories of his service and he has talked of fighting on Iwo Jima.

Might just be the last from his Unit.   Iwo was one of the only places my Dad wouldnt talk about..he had some funny story from every other island he was on...the only thing he ever said about Iwo was watching the first flag go up on Surabaci , then when things calmed down watching them redo it for the newsreels.

I certainly wouldn't correct or argue with a guy that age.

He's earned his peace.  If he wants to believe in unicorns, that's okay with me.

I'm going with this. My Grandpa is the last surviving member of the crew that he flew with.

It seems a lot of people get butt hurt over nothing in here.

Its also possible that he is completely full of shit.  Just like Vietnam and GWOT veterans, half the guys that are quick to tell the tales are borrowing someone else's history.

Hate to say it, but it is common as hell.

He actually doesn't talk about it, other than to tell me about the crosses.  Today, all he said in follow up was "That was a long time ago"

On the other hand, one of my neighbors at my old place I'm pretty sure was in the ETO, but he told me some goofy stories. He said he was the first one to put a 75mm ad hoc on a B25. One thing I did see, was an original photo of a Tiger tank recovery vehicle that I have seen in books. He claims he was the one that took the photo.

Seriously? You find humor in calling my friend a Nazi?

"Rancher around the corner" now becomes "friend."

Get a sense of humor, stud.

You wrote it, I quoted it.

Go.

He is a rancher around the corner, and he's my friend. I worked with his son for over 20 years. I eat dinner with the man. I have a sense of humor, but apparently "you" don't, stud.

And what I see is not a quote, its an edit into an insult.

While I doubt he's the last at this time, it is sobering to know that in my lifetime we will see the last of the greatest generation pass into the great beyond.
