Pretty sure the K31 has never been used in combat.
Israel used them.

Sure enough.

Don't try the boating accident line with them, they'll check!

I have 2 k31's I bought when they were $89 from AIM long ago.  Scored quite a few cases of GP11 with them. Only have 4 and half cases left.

I would pick them over any bolt gun around if ammo was prevalent.
They are extremely accurate.

Goddamn right it does.

What other surplus can you re-barrel and make into anything you like with ease?

Oh, that's right, none.

Have fun doing anything to a Russian boat paddle, save scoping it and bending the handle, without a full machine shop.

Einfield?  Enjoy all that surplus ammo that doesn't exist anymore.  And when you reload, don't expect case life beyond around 5 reloads for a war year rifle.

K31?  Novelty.

Sprinfield 03's and 1917's are the next best- because they are already in a caliber designed specifically to deliver justice.

Carcano?  Guido garbage.

Collecting the Mosin or the SKS rifle/carbine is like collecting stds.  They are dirty and cheap.

And then it isn't a WWII rifle, it is merely a Mauser action.

You are right then sir.  The point of the thread is WWII rifle.  Guess if I make it into whatever I like it doesn't count anymore, unless we want to debate whether 30-06 or 8mm-06 counts.

8mm surplus is still out there though.  CTD (gack) has Romanian ball, and SG still has Iranian stuff.

The glory days of cheap Yugo stuff is over.

Why would anyone do that?  You can't exactly find k98ks for under $300 anymore.  Even if you could, why destroy a historical rifle when you can go buy a new Savage that shoots MOA out of the box for the same price?

I would be if the action is so smooth that it binds up and burs like the Canadian Ross rifle in WWI.

The No. 4 MK 2 Enfield is the pinnacle of all general issue Bolt-Action Battle Rifles.

Short bolt throw, smooth action, Rugged as hell, accurate enough and most importantly, a 10 shot magazine in a 5 shot world.

Will sustain a higher rate of accurate fire than any other bolt gun.

End of Story.

"If I had to shoot a match with them..."

Look up the Ross rifle of WWI (Canadian) also a straight pull rifle that was a wonder on the match range, and a bust in the trenches of WWI.

I'd vote Lee Enfield Mk 4 for the best battle rifle.  Fast, high capacity, modular so you can fit the rifle to the soldier and maintain in the field.

I've fired 5 or 6 boxes of the Wolf Gold through my k31.  Very, very close in the accuracy department. I was skeptical at first. Bought 2 boxes to try. Bought more.
Plus you have Boxer primed brass to reload.

they almost cannot be blown up, they will hold together right up to the point that the barrel is literally blown off the gun

Read into low serial numbered 1903s and you'll see why that's a good thing.

I've heard of it, and own a Yugo capture (before re-marking them as M48 rifles). Have to break sight picture when removing the spent cartridge, and the magazine is one less and not removable on that piece of German work.

Still a good rifle, but edge to the K31.

1944 K31

Nametag found in butt stock

I contacted owner and he sent me pics of himself when he was in the Cavalry

owner died shortly after I contacted him

Swiss newspaper did a story about the rifle and me tracking down Karl

Here's the first email I received after sending the letter about the rifle to the owner:

Subject: I: Schmit Rubin K31 Rifle
Sent: Wednesday, September 07, 2005 10:26 AM
Hello 57Strat

May I introduce myself. I am Susanne Wiedmer and my parents are the neighbors of the Balsiger family. Yesterday Karl Balsiger received your letter regarding his old rifle and he is the right Mr. Balsiger. Since he does not speak English he asked me to translate.

Karl is born 1924 and spent his military service in the cavalry. He spent his life in Mühlethurnen, a quiet town in Switzerland placed between Berne and Thun. He is quite sick and was in the hospital. Now he is back home to recover. He has an incurable cancer disease and will get again chemotherapy.

He was very proud when he received your letter. He said that he will write down the story about the military service and the gun. I will then try to translate it.

Meanwhile I wish you all the best.

With Regards,
Susanne Wiedmer

Must be what happened to mine. There was no tag, but there was a chunk of hide and hair locked in the action. I like to imagine that there was an epic battle. Owner expended his ammo so he started swinging' that fucker like a club.

Love my K31. Amazing what they were able to do with the technology of the day. Trigger is just awesome and the straight pull bolt is very fast. I had a name tag under the butt plate and tried contacting the owner, but got a letter back from someone else who said they had no idea who he was. :(

I've also shot Wolf Gold in my K31. Accuracy isn't impressive, but it's an option if you want to preserve your supply of GP11.
