Just curious....I was dating a pharmacy school student whose parents were both doctors. I work for a health insurance company. I havnt been to a doctors visit in almost 7 years. She broke up with me because I don't really respect/care what they say/ believe in them, unless I'm on my death bed. I'm perfectly healthy, rarely ever get sick. I don't even have a primary care doctor as I have no idea the name of the guy I used to go to.
I am in my mid 20s

What about you?

I assure you, they exist.

Yes. I have a PCP who is also a specialist in a field that pertains to my specific needs.

33. full medical coverage and no, no I do not.

I go to the doctor when something is pretty fucked up, not for every sneeze or bruise.

Yes, but I don't see her on a weekly basis. If I do need something I think it's nice to see someone who knows my history.  I'm almost sixty so I might need more upkeep than some of you youngsters.

If you're 20 and in good health, but don't have a PCP not really a big deal; as long as your family history doesn't have a lot of issues and you don't overindulge.

But there will be a time when you not only have a PCP, but several specialists that take part in your care.  For me, I was pretty good until 36-37.  Then things started to change and the wheels fell off.

Yes I do. See them at least twice a year whether I need them or not. You never know when you might need them.

My health insurance doesn't require that I choose a PCP, I can go to whatever doctor will have me.
There is a doctor nearby I see as needed.
I have a primary care physicians as much as I have a primary care mechanic. There's the business I go to when I need to.

35, work in medical. My favorite PA just writes me a script if I need something. I take my own BP, how much else would a PCP do?

Eta: my car and dog get regular checkups.

I didn't for about more than 15 years, but my insurance now requires me to go to a doctor for an annual physical or else I have to pay a fee.

If my mandatory (fuck you Obama) insurance didn't require it, I wouldn't go.  Seems like a waste to me.  They listen to my lungs, play with my balls a little, and draw $300 worth of unnecessary lab work.

in my 20s, no, thought I was superman.  Now that I'm in my 30s, yes, and I get checked up regularly.  I rarely get sick, and I don't have any medical issues, and I intend to keep it that way.  What's the point of having health insurance if you don't use it to it's full potential?

Up until about your age I still went to the doc that delivered me. I moved away about the same time he retired. I then went nearly 20 yrs without seeing a doc. But by my mid-40s age caught up with me and I've had a primary care doc for 7 or 8 years now. And go in 2 - 4 times a year.

Someday you will too son.

Yes I do. I am young and last time I was there I found out I had cancer. Had I not went it would have gone in undetected and likely could have been worse for me.

It seems insignificant and a waste of time until they find something wrong which will happen to all of us eventually.

I'm 51 and yes I do.

He's a little hippy with a pony tail, and the best Dr I have ever been to. I don't visit for just anything, but am pretty strict on my annual checkup. He is not one of those "let me prescribe" guys, he's happy that I'm 51 and not on any daily medication. A good Dr can help you ease into the older years in a healthy way. Find one that you DO respect, and let him advise you. I would travel a long way to see this Doc, he is a great guy.

And every year when he jams his fist up my ass, I say the same thing "Well Doc, at least we know we are both having the worst part of our day at the same time" I swear to God, that little fella has fingers like a D cell Mag light.

At 25, you probably don't need one, unless you are obese or otherwise unhealthy.

I got serious about having a PCP when I hit 35.  In my twenties I didn't need a doctor, ever.  Stuff starts coming at you at a faster pace as the years accumulate.  Now at 50 I see my PCP once a year unless I have a real problem.  He's a no-nonsense country doctor type who I rely on to not only provide basic care but to also guide me should I need a specialist.  He absolutely will not tolerate doctor shopping from one of his patients so anyone I see has to at least be run past him first.

OP, if you're in your twenties I'd suggest finding a relatively young PCP and just doing an annual appointment.  It makes getting prescriptions easier and if you have a hospital admission it doesn't leave you so much at the mercy of whatever quack they assign you.  It's not so much a matter of "believing in" doctors as it is just a bit of pre-planning.

I can't believe a girlfriend would break up with you over this.  I don't even know what to think about that.

Nope. In the past 10 years, a dentist, a chiropractor and a dermatologist are the only doctors I have gone to.

Primary care doctors are "gatekeepers." Health insurers like them because they tend to keep down visits to the more expensive specialists.

I have a number of specialists that I go to. Having a primary care doctor, in addition, would be a waste of time and money. If I had an emergency that was not within the purview of one of my specialists, I would go to the hospital emergency room, the urgent care clinic, or the group practice that is connected with the local hospital (in that order, depending on severity).
