Wasn't there some rumor going around that. Benghazi had some sort or weapons deal going on, and it speculated that it was aa type stuff. I guess they got some of these also. |

Wonder who is going to do maintenance on that op sight once they beat the crap out of it...

and who is training them? View Quote Who said that shooter needed in the field training? He may have been trained before he or those TOWs went to Syria. I think the shooter looks like an awfully clean cut FSA. A lot more western than a typical Syrian or mujahidin fighter. I wonder if he's somebody's SF-type sent to "advise" the FSA about using TOWs. |

I've never served, so correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it considered bad form to
set one of those up exposed in the middle of the field? |

To be honest, I don't understand supplying them with that kind of system, it's overkill versus what they're going up against.
The Metis and SPG-9's are already doing a number on the T-72's over there. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=a7c_1382983531 Snackbar level through the roof, the one tank crew member is almost run over by his own tank after getting out of it, and then the ammo goes off soon after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6RC-GZuhiI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2wImk5LhL8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wijIkLpRr3U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5IBtiYXN7E Small RPG hit, warning graphic, crew is shot as they leave tank. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XThu_55ioxU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb-Ec-o7nKk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02xCPsyWE2I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMRBIxMHTSU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgwsgbsIPFQ They don't need our TOW systems. |

Now if they could actually hit a tank with one, we might learn something. But we've tested TOW long before, we know it works already. See below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlGrrKRNqRQ |

Or they could be from Saudi Arabia a few souces seem to be pointing to them as the supplier.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/15/us-syria-crisis-arms-usa-idUSBREA3E0RZ20140415 It was not possible to independently verify the authenticity of the videos or the supplier of the BGM-71 TOW anti-tank rockets shown in the videos. Some analysts suggested they might have been provided by another state such as Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally, probably with Washington's acquiescence. View Quote Lister said that if Washington were unwilling to supply TOW rockets itself, the most likely point of origin was Saudi Arabia which has thousands of anti-tank projectiles in its arsenal.
Under terms of the original sale, Riyadh would be obliged to tell Washington if it were transferring them to any third party. "Considering the groups already seen with these missile systems and considering Saudis' already established reputation for providing weapons to moderate... groups, Saudi would seem the most likely candidate at this stage," Lister said. The other major regional supporter of the rebels, Qatar, apparently do not hold such rockets in its regular military stores, analysts say, and may have bought Chinese weaponry from elsewhere, perhaps Sudan, for shipment to rebels last year. Chinese-built HJ-8 anti-tank guided missiles remain a relatively common part of the rebel arsenal, according to Syria arms experts. HJ-8s first popped up largely in the hands of Islamist groups early last year, possibly coming from Qatar. More recent shipments have been noticed in the hands of relatively secular insurgent factions and are believed by analysts to have been supplied by Saudi Arabia instead. RUSSIAN ROCKETS, IRANIAN DRONES Use of Chinese MANPAD anti-aircraft missiles by Islamist militants has dwindled in recent months, monitors say. Such missiles arrived last year, again believed to have come from Qatar, a development that particularly worried Western states. "I suspect there's been two waves of Chinese weapons, the first from Qatar and the second from Saudi Arabia going to different groups," said "Brown Moses" blogger Higgins. The United States and other Gulf Arab states have bemoaned Qatar's scattergun approach to arming rebel forces that has seen many weapons end up in the hands of fighters affiliated with al Qaeda linked and other radical Islamists. Qatari and Saudi officials will not discuss their Syria policy in detail. View Quote It's a mess, like Mad Max beyond Thunderdome, but with tanks.... |
|
So, we, or the Iranians, or the Qatarians, or Chinese, or who the fuck ever, are making it possible for AQ assholes and Syrian Army assholes to kill each other even faster and with higher efficiency?
And we get awesome videos out of the deal? I mean leakage of some of these weapons out into the wider world is probably bad, but frankly there's nothing stopping the original suppliers (Iranians or Chinese) from doing that anyway, and the Syrian civil war has been going on for three years now without an American shopping mall getting TOW'd, so I'm not really seeing a downside to the whole "let them kill them all and have God sort it out" approach. |
|
Qatar has supplied a bunch of Chinese HJ-8s,loads of clips of em popping turrets of T-72s. Best chance these are Iranian Toophans.
Real TOWs COULD be Qatari or KSA old stock but I believe the US would need to approve that and so far has resisted supplying FSA with weapons. Training in Jordan yes however As for training , many of these guys were conscripts at one point or even professionals who deserted . It's not like shooting an ATGM is the same as flying a fighter...most could rtfm and figure it out, especially with help Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Those vids make serving in a tank look a whole lot less glamorous than it used to look.

What is that spinning-up noise just before the weapon fires?
ETA: found it. A squib fires to discharge a N2 resevoir that spins up the gyro. The TOW 2 manual is on scribd. Have I mentioned lately that I had a genuine practice Redeye missile in my basement when I was a kid? 100% true. |
