This is a '70's era thread. Most of you wanna-be's were still shitting yellow back then. If you rode in the '70's then chime in.

The shovelhead motor started being built in 1966. Got any more of your infinite wisdom you want to share?

It's also obvious that all of you using the worn out stereotypical "oil leak" drivel have no idea that it was intentional. The earlier models scavenged a bit of oil that was routed thru a line to drip oil on the drive chain to keep it lubed.

I bought my Low Rider new in 85 and my buddy had a 80's something Honda 750. Kept telling me his would still be running after mine was dead. His oh so reliable Honda thew a cam chain in about 88 and toasted the motor. My Low Rider is still on the road and Honda boy switched over to Harley.

I don't give a shit what ya ride. I'll wave to pretty much anyone on two wheels, even mopeds and old fuckers on rascals. Get over yourselves for fucks sake.

I've got 13 Kawasaki's and a 1988 FLTC(which I've had for 15 years). If it wasn't for my wife thinking that riding on the back of the Harley is the most fun thing in the world I would sell it yesterday. I have never figured out what good a 700lb, 50 horse power motorcycle is good for. You have a better chance of getting run over on it because you don't have enough power to get out of danger quick. As for as I can see the only thing people buy them for is so they can say "I have a Harley" which means absolutely nothing to me.

Here is the HD, beside my '76 Kawasaki 900 LTD

Here is the 1965 Kawasaki B8 125 that I restored, took the last nine months.

Here is the 1972 H2 750 that I am restoring now. Almost done.

Here is the rest of the Kawasaki triple stash.

I'm afraid not, friend of mine still rides his '80 Super Glide pretty regularly. About 85k on the clock and still runs great. It was his only transportation while in the Army, it's been nationwide. I love the older bikes but they are pretty rough on the old body, you won't catch me riding one very far.                                                          When the Japs invaded it didn't take a rocket scientist to determine they had a more solid product. They have long since left HD in the stone age. Why do we still ride them? I'm not gonna try to explain, your not gonna get it, but that's ok.

Lot of bad product during the AMF days, no one can dispute that. QC went south, union disputes etc. etc. What AMF did do was spend tons of money trying to update the factories, it was pretty caveman up til that time. Without this HD would be a long gone distant memory, they were in hot water at the time.

By every objective measure, Japanese sport bikes are better motorcycles than HDs.  You may have an emotional attachment to them and that's fine.  There are clubs devoted to Model Ts as well because the members have an emotional attachment to them.  The Model T owners, however, are far more rational than HD owners because they don't even try to delude themselves into thinking that a Model T is as good as a modern automobile.

I do have admiration for those who keep old Ford Model T and As on the road.  But I don't think they are the best vehicle ever.  Just a stepping stone.

Yes, I know how to tear down a CV carb.  I know how to troubleshoot electronic ignition.  I know how to change TUBELESS tires.  Because I have done it.

Quit thinking old school is better, you sound like neo-luddites.

At the time, they were a great design, but not a great car,  not unlike the AK47.  The Model T made the car affordable, which has had a huge effect on transportation in this country and worldwide ever since.  The Model T was arguable one of the most important designs of all time, much more so than the AK47.  Today in this country, a car is a persons second largest purchase and for most of the rest, it is their largest.

...but yeah, a new "Dodge Dart*", aka a Alfa Romeo / FIAT manufactured by Chrysler, is a far better car.

*worst new car I could think of quickly

Not even close.  This statement reveals your gross lack of knowledge about the motorcycle industry.

Those tariffs that you mention were lifted earlier than scheduled, at the request of Harley-Davidson.  H-D never went into bankruptcy, never received a government bailout, never was owned by the government.

The stupidity in this thread is simply amazing.  Makes me wonder that if there is another American revolution, will the guys on the front lines of the revolutionary armies screw the whole thing up by stopping to argue about 9mm versus .45ACP, or Glock versus 1911?

When someone can show me how one guy riding a Harley or another guy riding a sport bike somehow infringes on the other's enjoyment of owning or riding a motorcycle, then I'll take this bullcrap seriously.

2011 speed triple for dangerously stupid levels of fun

1970 bonnie with a tiger head and ZX-6 front end ridged style

hopefully a 45 flattie with a Subaru pleo supercharger connected to a Norton 4 speed gear box going vintage flat track style.

Love the Bonnie.

I don't hate non-Harleys. I hate douchebags that talk out of their ass; plenty on both sides.

The one thing about Harleys the fit, finish and attention to detail seem to be a little better as far as cruisers go. Compare the Bolt to the 48 the 48 doesn't have the big visible tank seam or as heavy of chrome as the 48 and paint job is definitely to a higher standard.

The old Brit guys, the old German guys,, the Italian fans, the UJM guys, vintage dirtbike guys, they all appreciate THEIR bikes, but understand that there is better stuff out there.  HD fanbois think the world is flat and Moses himself rode a HD.

I don't really dislike Harley Davidson motorcycles,it's the people that ride them that annoys me the most.

My favorite is the "you are jealous because you can't afford one".  If I am dropping that kind of coin on a bike, it will be a pasta burner.

Pro tip for the Harley guys, if you are having issues in your steering head bearings, chose a grease with better anti-false brinelling properties.  HD has been told to do this by their bearing supplier, but still uses shitty grease.

At one time HD had cutting edge technology. Dry sump oiling system, overhead valves, hydraulic forks. But that was a looong time ago.

I want to thank highrailjon for making me spend more money and start building another chopper.  When it's finished it'll have a Softail Evo engine & an electric start 5 speed transmission.  I started collecting parts.  If you've never built a bike from the ground up, you wouldn't understand the passion.

Kraft Tech frame.

Replica V-Twin Springer front end.

I just picked WL springer off ebay with an Ibeam front leg. There is something so righteous about the look of an old springer.

I bet my YZ 100 would have outrun most Harleys in the Late 70's early 80's

So, what does the OP think of my '78 Honda CM400T???

With 40,000+ miles, and no major work other than oil changes & brakes, I love the 65 miles per gallon I'm getting with that old bike!

Meet me at the local tittie bar and see who packs the best looking dancer behind them when we leave.

And there's a better than average chance the dancer will come complete with something you can't get rid of.

No. Fucking. Thanks.

I just picked WL springer off ebay with an Ibeam front leg. There is something so righteous about the look of an old springer.

I agree.

"It's always been important for Hell's Angels to ride American-made machines. In terms of pure workmanship, personally I don't like Harleys. I ride them because I'm in the club, and that's the image, but if I could I would seriously consider riding a Honda ST1100 or a BMW.

We really missed the boat not switching over to the Japanese models when they began building bigger bikes. I'll usually say, "F*** Harley-Davidson. You can buy an ST1100 and the motherf***** will do 110 miles per hour right from the factory all day long ...

While it's probably too late to switch over now, it would have been a nice move because Japanese bikes today are so much cheaper and better built. However, Japanese motorcycles don't have as much personality."

The (supposed) ex president of a (supposed) well known area club now rides a VTX1300 and his wife rides an 1100 V-Star.

He was an absolute genius when it came to fabbing Shovelhead-powered choppers but eventually switched to something which was a little more with it, technology wise.

THAT'S the truth!

I was in the motorcycle business back in the 70s and 80s....I remember the AMF Harley's.....they came from the
Factory dripping HUGE puddles of oil.

AMF = Another Mechanical Fuckup

I still have a 1980 AMF wideglide.  Just rode the bitch today.  Loud and pretty fast with lots of money into the engine.  Damn thing leaves drops of oil wherever I park it.  It is a love hate thing, kind of like a wife.  There are better ones out there but I am committed to this one.  I have been riding this same bike for over 30 years.

My wife rides a Yamaha and my daughters have Chinese 150cc scooters.  I like riding and working on bikes.  The Harley makes sure I always get to get my wrench on.  If you don't want to work on it,  don't buy a harley.
