Note: This is not me
Graphic photos at links.. http://ryanjarcy.wordpress.com/2013/03/31/how-i-blew-off-a-leg-with-a-12-gauge-shotgun-part-one/ Holding my pistol-gripped WesternField 550ABD (Mossberg 500 clone) by my side, shaking from the adrenaline while still observing proper weapons safety (finger off the trigger, pointed downward, the usual lot). I held up my iPhone 4 and dialed nine, one, one and BOOM! A thunderous blast concussed my body as I dropped to the ground and ate shit on the pavement floor of the front entrance with my face, thinking and yelling "AD! AD!” (gun nerd for accidental discharge) as I went to stand back up and move to the house. More photos at link... |

Guy was an idiot... place must have been interesting if people can just drive around and load up their truck with his tools?

Shitty shotgun not surprised. Check where your muzzle is pointed.

At least the doc put a smiley face on it.
(Damn. That would suck.) |

Quoted: What were you calling 911 for? From the way you worded it, it sounds like you were calling them prior to the ND? View Quote Below the photo I posted it wasn't me. It is an interesting article about what happened to this guy. Very well written and I think some people might benefit from his tragedy. I'm going to move the disclaimer at the top of the post. |

The amputee said he didn't have his finger on the trigger, making it sound like the shotgun went off by itself.

I had no idea a shotgun could blow off limbs...
Is he absolutely positive he didn't pull the trigger? |
|
But...but.... GD says birdshot is worthless at close range???

Ouch, I know a man who shot himself with a 12 guage slug while deer hunting (pulled loaded shotgun out of truck by the barrel) Stupid yes, badass yes...drove a couple of miles to his Dads house and honked on the horn until someone came out. Toughest human that I know, I would have died when I realized what had just happened.

Looks like Jack Skelington's face from Nightmare Before Christmas.

I read the whole thing. Ignore gun safety and you will pay the price at some point

* Cheap PGO shotgun, not loaded, HD plan includes birdshot
* Racking the shotgun to scare the bad guy away * Pointing a gun at things you're not prepared to destroy (both the alleged perp and one's own body) * Broke the other 3 rules, too Sorry, but you set yourself up for failure. |

I've got to give a big thanks to the author of that. Not many people would have the bravery to share an event like that and let other people learn from an extremely painful (emotionally and physically) experience like that.
I think his story is a HUGE reminder of why it is important to develop good habits in firearms manipulation that reinforce the four rules. Firearms are very serious business and the penalties for even a moment's carelessness, even in an understandably stressful situation, can be very harsh. |

But...but.... GD says birdshot is worthless at close range??? View Quote GD says there are better choices. Let's say for example, that he was trying to kill you with a firearm instead of calling 911 - how long would he have remained functional and able to think/act after taking a contact shot of 12ga birdshot? A lot longer than I want someone shooting at me would be my guess - both due to the ammo and the shot placement. |

A shotgun is my go-to home defense weapon becuase of the devastation it can cause.

I'm still trying to figure out how the gun went off? He pulled the trigger This. Does not matter what he says, he pulled the trig. I trust the mehanics of the shotgun more than I trust the filbert using it. |

I've seen this kind of thing a million times on construction sites.
people get careless and lazy and then somebody wins the lottery then everyone mutters about how you need to follow the safety rules better and repeat nobody reading this actually believes that something like this could happen to him so.... people get careless and lazy and then.... |

The guy fucked up, and he admits it. I give him credit for trying to prevent the next dumbass from doing the same.

Any finger-pointing or arguments or lawsuits would be utterly retarded as shit just happens when you pull the trigger: I sorta think the grip might have been slippery and less-than-optimally designed, but I shot myself and blaming the grip or anything else would be dishonest and responsibility-diverting on a disgusting level; sure the doctor was cold, mean-spirited and gruff at best in his job yet he did stitch me up and give me my smiley-stump, but I’m the only one at fault by any measure- gotta own up if you fuck up! |

Wow....I'm sorry for the guy. Only one mistake guys, one.....that's all that's between you or someone you care about or love, and a life time full of fuck. Be careful out there. |

People are dense. You'll have to put in 72 point type that it's not you.
