Do you need to be in the Military? A cop? Some other qualifying profession?

Or does a person determine that they are one individually through training and skill at arms?

here you go....

“Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.”

By definition, must involve war.

Different wars generate different types of warriors.

Ultimate warriors require facepaint and brightly colored ribbon/bandanna adornments, though.

someone who seeks battle.
who seeks to close with the enemy.
He who REQUIRES the ultimate competition that only lethal combat can provide and feels himself an empty shell when deprived  of it.

In short, a cola warrior.

You don't really know until you know...

Training doesn't make you a warrior...it enhances your skills.

Being in the military doesn't make you a warrior...it makes you a Soldier, Marine, Airman, or Seaman...

Your 8th grade science teacher might have been a warrior if pushed into service.

A warrior runs to the gunfire, excited for the thrill of battle. And misses it when it's done.

Being a warrior is an internal thing. It simply "is" for that person. And as the quote above...there's not many that truly are.

I like that. I have seen the same idea about surviving catastrophes. %80 will stand there. %10 will do the wrong thing.%10 will do the right thing. Its not the same thing, but follows the same theme

Probably this guy.

After all, he's the only one qualified to be a warrior or to train warriors.  If it weren't for him, there would be no warriors in the world.

One who engages in war as a profession.  Sometimes contrasted with "soldier,"  implying the latter is simply compelled to serve in a military force but has no real martial skills or passion.  But, not always.

All too often used by Walter Mitty types who fancy themselves future saviors of the local food court.

Why don't we have these discussions about pilots, electricians, carpenters, or plumbers?

This. A warrior is not only someone who is a fighter by profession, and a good one, but someone who's mindset and personality predisposes them to being "Warriors"

I would say guys in SFOD-D, DevGru etc are true warriors.

Yeah, except it was written in ancient times by a guy used to dirt farmers being enslaved as conscripts who fought with spears.  Of course it makes the handful of full-timers look good.

And plenty of people survive and thrive through catastrophes, because they prepare for them, and aren't stupid.  It's just it's a lot easier to focus on the poor schmucks who build their houses on flood plains and in the paths of hurricanes and go "wow, people suck in disasters" - because the people who are prepared for those events aren't a story.

For example, the ice storms that shut down the southeast this year and were crippling are a joke to people who are used to them.  Californians laugh at earthquakes.  And AL, FL, and MS were back on their feet soon after Katrina - it's just NOLA was a demonstrative failure - and even within that, residents note that it's only certain areas that were really fucked up.

especially if they are an 18X, not a warrior.

Being really well trained doesn't make a warrior.

It makes someone who is (probably) and expert in the profession of arms.

A warrior, like mentioned before, is someone who runs to battle. No one knows what they'll do until those first bullets zing over their head.

(Training helps pre-determine that, but it's not 100%)
