I'm not affected and I can't help reading the news on it over and over and over. Its not like affected customers don't know they shopped there. You could have called your card bank and possibly avoided the issue. You want your bank to call several hundred thousand (conservative estimate) customers? I love how you don't mention Target as you are spreading blame elsewhere. |

chase has done me right so far... EXCEPT (and its a HUGE except) for my home loan... man o man they fucked the dog on that one... im happy with the terms but holy fuck it took 68 days to approve and every paper they needed they had within the first 72 hours of my starting the whole process..
any for the first time in over a year i purchased something in a store that wasnt a grocery store or homedepot using my debit card... of course it was target... we will see how this goes in the end |

My card from my local credit union was getting beat up, so I just went ahead and replaced it. Took 10 minutes at the branch. Forgot to make sure there's no link between checking and savings (e.g., overdraft protection). We had bad credit card debt and the one I have now is literally only for car rental purposes.
I could live without what's in the checking account for 10 days. |

Local news just showed a story of Chase opening many branches today because of the Target issue.

Capitol One called us early Friday AM. Have new card as of yesterday.

I do a lot of work in Banks. Chase can make you a new card on the spot at several locations and possibly increase that daily limit while you are there. I know this because that damn card machine is often in my way.
I was also working in a small Credit Union Saturday and overheard that they were / had issued 600+ new cards because of Target. |
|
Seriously OP? You keep your money in a bank, and you complain about getting bent over? Wow! I don't deal with banks, only my credit union. I like growing my money, not paying some company's stockholders to store it for me. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

So your bank recognizes a valid risk to one of their depositors and takes action to protect them from a major loss, and this is somehow a bad thing? In a day and age when most bankers wouldn't cross the street to piss on you if your head was on fire I can't believe this is even an issue. Didn't they notify you by email or text? My little podunk regional bank does when they have an issue of any kind with my account.
My bank just killed my debit card on the spot and is issuing a new one. Yeah, no debit card over a holiday that is sure to cost me lots of money. Am I bitching? Nope, because at least I'm not getting ripped off by some creeper who stole millions of account numbers from Target. |
|
Chase is protecting Chase from losing money, since that is ultimately who would pay for fraudulent charges. They're leaving the cards on in a minimal way so you don't starve to death in the mean time. That's a sign it's going to take a while to print and mail 10 million new debit cards...
Situations like this is why I use credit cards for purchases. In my quest to harvest credit card rewards, I think I have 10 different active accounts with 5 different banks. Some of the cards are infrequently used, so if one gets burned, I could always transition to the next. Stop by the bank and get $1,000 to fill your wallet. That way you can be your own ATM. No fees too :) |

I don't blame the banks for narrowing transactions. |

For their credit cards, it looks like they're doing a wait-and-see approach. They just advised us to continue using our card as normal and to please check online regularly for unusual activity. Glad it was our credit card and not our debit card we used. If there was even a possibility of the debit card being compromised, I'd get a new one immediately. Credit card, I'm not that worried. If someone uses it, at least it's not my money that's tied up.

Who shops at Target? View Quote No kidding. I shop at target about once every 10 years. The last time I did I bought a child's toy piano for a birthday present for my newish nephew. The morning it hit the news, wife went to the bank, who cancelled and re-issued her debit card (she'd shopped at Target twice during the problem time frame).
In the meantime, we can: Use credit cards Write checks Pay cash Easy. |

I don't blame chase for their handling of the situation.....However what pissed me off was receiving the email regarding limiting my transactions at 6 pm on saturday, pure inconsiderate bull shit imho.
Oh Yea and not listing any reference as to which of my accounts the email was regarding. When I called and talked to someone I was told the 100/300 limit had been rethought and changed to 250/1000 |

Would the OP feel better if they offered to let him take as much money out as he wanted so long as he would agree to cover any fraudulent charges?

And this appears to be the result of insufficient cash reserves not a bank policy. Never be so low on cash that you have to plan to withdraw some with an ATM to do your Christmas shopping. |
