If the last lead smelting plant in the U.S. is soon to close, won't this make bullet prices skyrocket?

Isn't lead a strategic necessary metal?

How much more do we have to take from the EPA?

The sky is the limit with EPA regulation.  They are still trying to get regulatory power over dust (farm operations).

Good point about lead being a strategic metal.

So glad I have enough for several generations.

I don't know how to make steel core bullets for my 45/70, 45 colt, and 45 AUTO.

I suspect that here in Illinois in the future there will be brush piles set up on piles of old car batteries.  The brush pile will be out in the middle of some farmer's field.  The plastic melts, acid boils off and the lead will trickle down to the ground.  Once the fire and coals have died down enough, the farmer will go in and scoop up the now solidified puddled of lead.

Yeah it will be really nasty to do and will probably release all sorts of bad chemicals.  The EPA will probably make the penalties for that even stiffer too.

It's a primary ore smelter closing and not a secondary recycling smelter. The overwhelming majority of lead in the U.S. is processed by secondary smelters recycling lead.

No big deal except to the people that live next to that smelter.

i wouldn't want it in my backyard, would you?

Several “secondary” smelters, where lead is recycled from products such as lead acid batteries or spent ammunition components, still operate in the United States.

5th sentence in the body of the article.

I realize this is GD, BUT reading is still fundamental,

We'll use foreign lead.  Tell me what domestically-smelted metal is cheaper than foreign metal these days?

In a way we're winning by doing that.  We get cheaper lead from china while letting them destroy, poison and pollute their own country.
