Who here would like to see a clone of the Steyr AUG produced here in the US? I was thinking about asking DSArms to do it, since they already seem to have a relationship with Steyr from the purchase of the STG58 reciever blueprints. If I'm not mistaken, there would be a high demand for weapons of this type, and if we put enough pressure on them they just might do it. Personally, I would like to see it made with the scope mount rather than the integrated scope and also use AR mags, but that's an issue for later. If anyone agrees, send 'em an e-mail - that's my next stop.

Because so few were made in comparisons to AK's FAL's and others, and correspondingly parts kits are so expensive, I imagine a AUG built on a US receiver would cost a minimum of $1500. Would anyone pay that for a possible Century type?
I wouldn't.

If it was a quality piece, made like a DSA FAL, I almost certainly would pay. (plus thefact that I cant own a REAL AUG[V], but I could own a clone, if there was one)

Would anyone pay 1500.00 for an AUG clone? I would say yes.
People are paying more than that for the Special Weapons MP5 clones.
I personally would be interested in an AUG clone if one can be produced for less money than a USR.

Yes Oldeschool, I will get an FAL too. I just heard back from DSA, they say they've thought about it, but they're already planning on a .223 FAL and some other .223 project (?). So the AUG may not happen, at least not from them, but the future still looks bright.[:D]

Not to be flip - but if you want a bullpup that takes AR mags and isn't expensive, get a Bushmaster M17S. It's a great rifle, and for around $600 new, there's plenty of money for optics and modifications before you even get close to what an AUG clone would cost.

Btw- I think $1500 is very optimistic, partly for the reason SS109 pointed out. Most clones these days use surplus parts from around the world. If everything was built here, it would probably be pricier than that - and also for demand reasons. It would be priced higher than $1500 simply because enough people are willing to pay more than $1500. After all, you don't think it cost anywhere near $800 to build a new AR do you?

When I first saw a Steyr Aug in a magazine years ago, I liked it. It was very modern and high tech looking. I also loved the 'ray gun' look of the HK P7 and I did get one. For home defense I really dont like the AUG. I just like the way it looks. I don't see any real advantage to the AUG design over the AR, other than weight? I would rather have a DSA/FAL or another AR15.

The advantages to the AUG are the same as any bullpup design - a longer barrel in a shorter rifle, and better balance. (For example, the Bushmaster M17S has a 21.5 inch barrel, but is only 30 inches long - significantly shorter than an AR with a 16" barrel - and it can be shot one-handed quite easily).

The better balance and shorter overall length of a bullpup would allow you to swing it around and acquire targets faster - so technically it would probably be superior for home defense, but I never consider a rifle that useful for home defense anyway. A .45 or a shotgun should do for that - but that's just my personal perference.

How much to regular AUG's (pre-ban) go for these days anyway?

Ouch!

Yeah, I'd say $1500 for a clone would be a fantasy. They'd probably start at $2000 at least. Look at the SW HK clones - the HK91 clones cost almost as much as a real one - and a lot of people think the SW's suck ass.
