I did many a patrol down those same roads, natives never really fucked with us. I was with 7th Marines and got there a day or two after the landings on the beach. 24 of the Pakistani soldiers that relieved us at the stadium were ambushed and massacred shortly after we left. This led to the pursuit of Adid. Worst shithole ever.

Red devil, D co 1st Bn and Blue Devil, A co. 3rd Bn. Never good at names and dates, but I believe it was while I was with 3rd, could be wrong. Was on the Bde 10miler team with him. Two ability groups while training- normal people, and gazelles. He was in the latter.

I remember reading in "Ghost Wars" that the plan and methodology to shoot down our helicopters was taught by a branch of AQ to the militiamen in Somalia. Basically many of the militias in Somalia were AQ member groups or allied with them, and AQ trainers showed them our TTPs for helo insertion. They were taught how and where to aim on a Blackhawk and the rest was history. Don't think that those Blackhawks being shot down was some type of lucky shot....that was part of an AQ affiliate battle-plan.

I just finished the book for the 400th time 2 days ago. I believe the audiobook is an updated edition as there were some things in there I am 100 percent positive did not appear in Bowden's earlier versions.

General Garrison's legacy as a General Officer deserves to be that of one of the finest Military Leaders in modern times. I'm glad that just about every account that I have read about the man all make it a point to express that fact to the reader.

Staff Sergeant Dan Schilling (co-authored with Matt Eversmann, from his book: The Battle of Mogadishu: Firsthand Accounts From The Men of Task Force Ranger. Page 187 Schilling stated "I should pause here for a moment to say a few words about General Garrison. Many know his record and command history. I'm not the person to expound on his exploits; in fact I don't know the man very well. But I will say he is the finest general officer I have ever worked for and probably ever will. He understood his men and how we thought, what we wanted and needed, and understood the situation anywhere he was, immediately and completely. He is the finest leader an operator could ask for. It wasn't a shame that his career was derailed after our deployment; it was a criminal act committed by political cowards."

"Whenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt. That's the first thing they teach you."

You call an AR a weapon of war?

Honor your Oath and it won't become one.

Gun control requires so much faith in the face of statistics, data&history it should be a religion.

Thanks for that link. Jeff Struecker was my Chaplain when I was in the 82nd. Great guy. All the platoons tried to avoid him in the morning when they stepped out on Ardennes, because he liked to find a group to run with (lead) and he was FAST.

A Blue Devil were you?

What company?

Touched on a key point that reoccurs again and again in talking with veterans.

Acknowledge you are already dead, and each moment a gift, and that your only choice is whether you die with honor or not.

Only then can you do what you must in combat..

Today is a good day to die.

to be amongst men who have made that cognitive leap, to share danger with them, to lead them.

There is nothing like it in the world.

I got stuck on EIB ruck march water point detail right before I left. Here I was at mile 5, thinking I had an hour to rack out. No shit there I was, 35-45 or so minutes in, and here comes CPT Scott, running down the road with his ruck on.

Didn't even know about that one, thanks!

Where do I find this video? (not the trailer quoted above)

Cpt Scott had out company doing field PT during a field problem. After a few days, I think the majority was ready to revolt.

It is interesting that his acceptance of the inevitability of death is almost word for word what the Samurai warriors came to accept hundreds of years ago. Both apparently found that the acceptance of death allowed them an unusual kind of peace, and ability to function when others couldn't.
