Well, what ammo is it?

What kind of ammo testing/selection have you done with the ak to find a "pet" load?

We all seem to experiment with our AR's, then feed the AK's whatever is cheapest.
Then we end up with apples and oranges.

It's a mix if Tula, wolf, and golden tiger. I've got an ammo can that's a free for all.

Now it shoots the best with 154 grain soft points.

I handloaded for a so-so SAR1 and was able to significantly improve accuracy of the rifle.  I'm sure there are other tweaks that can be applied in bedding also that would help it.

Here are my targets - I didn't have a ruler so don't know the group sizes.

these were my best three of the day....well except for the AK

Here is the AK -  I couldn't see any of the BFL's so I just aimed around here and there, then just shot at the paper.

Here is AR target - AE 50 grain varmint - my rifle likes this load

The lower right was my first aiming position, followed by the upper left, then I went diagonal from right to left.

ETA: The 100 yard line has been confirmed by two serious bolt gun shooters with laser range finders to actually be at 89 yards. I was just informed of this, so not sure how it effects the grouping. This due to them moving the target posts when they re did the backstops.

Here is the rifle

frankenbuild - 14.5" bushmaster 1/9 barrel, 3-9x vortex, front rested on a rest they had at the range with some sandbags for movement. Had my hand resting over the scope to help steady the rifle, no rear bag or anything.

It took me about 10 minutes to shoot the AR groups - don't know if this is against the rules. I would load 5, shoot 5, load 5, shoot 5, etc... I made sure to use what I learned at Appleseed, NPOA and all that stuff, I did consider using my USGI sling, but I left it at home.

I shot the AK group in around 20 seconds.

updated my post.

I was speaking to a couple of bolt gun shooters just now about this contest and was informed when they redid the backstops at 100 yards, they dumped backstop mounds at the 100 yard mark. The target boards are actually at 89 yards as verified by their laser range finders.

Fin, that is actually not uncommon.  It IS as Eric says, not even close, and for anyone trying to do trajectory work that 10.5% reduction can impact the workup.  In this case I guess a guy just works it into the factors and posts the results.

We have several ranges around here that are "off" and I grew up Back East with two that were short by a similar amount.

My range on the ranch is lasered at all the firing points by 25 meter increments to 200 YARDS.  Because of a ditch I have a 200 YARD firing point.  Then on out to long range I have points at 100 meter increments but we can fire from wherever.  The LASER rangefinder is the coolest piece of gear I have in my range box!

For the 1 MOA Challenge I lasered 101 yards and shot it.

I bet there are a lot of 90 yard "100 yard" ranges out there...

I would give parts of my body that would interfere with procreation to have a 10/22 that shot like that. Excellent rifle and shooting!

You should look at what Old_Painless did with his factory 10/22 Target earlier in this thread. He's still in first place for .22 with optics. I had no idea how good Ruger was making those target models until this thread. It's really bugging me that a factory 10/22 is shooting better than my Anschutz. I've got to get some more match ammo and see if I can't tighten my groups up.

Thanks.  I've been wanting one for some time, really wanted the black laminated stock, but it was not in stock.  LGS had this one on the shelf for $390, best price I've seen on one, so no hesitation.  Scored 3 bricks of CCI Mini Mag also, they were only gonna sell me two, so I asked "Even with a rifle purchase?"  So the guy threw in another box.

I might be able to tighten those up a bit, didn't really take my time just ripped them off.  Pulled a couple of shots.  Load shoot, load shoot, load 5 more shoot.  Didn't give the barrel any time to cool but it didn't really get hot either.

haha dude thats ridiculous.

Mine doesn't shoot quiet like that.  I bought a whole bunch of different ammo for mine when I got it a few years ago and had a blast at the range I put a red dot on it.  Now I can find the set screws for the mount on top and haven't felt like trying.  The damn match ammo is tough to find.  I spent a couple range days shooting match .22 all day.

That's a good price. I wouldn't have hesitated either. I never see the target models in stock anywhere.

I think you could tighten up those groups quite a bit if you tried some match ammo. Mini Mags are good reliable ammo, but good match ammo is amazing. Good luck finding any right now though.

Shot the challenge twice today with the same gun.  First go I used a hand drawn target which was just a bit rough to see with the mirage today.  I felt like the gun can shoot much better.  I shot at a range with a buddy so I was a bit rushed and shot from a bench which I hate doing.  I would rather have my dick in the dirt.  Ammo is norma match 168 grain.  I bought the ammo just to get the brass and figured I would see how it shot.

Rifle in question is an ashbury precision ordnance build 20 inch rock solid barrel.  I used the atlas bipod up front but didn't use the monopod rear as per the rules instead I used a small wedge.  This was not much fun to shoot on a wooden bench with.

First target

groups .897,  .768,  .1.139,  .638,  .1.209   avg 4.651/5 .9302  .888 moa

second target

pictures look like I took them with a potato.  Groups are better so those are what I am posting.

Nick Forney:  APO .308 bushnell dmr 3.5-21 G2, Norma Match 168 factory Groups .263,  .826,  1.07,  1.003,  .884   4.046/5 .809 .773 MOA

I am excited to do ocw and get this rifle to work.  I will definitely shoot this in the prone next go and I have confidence this rifle will be able to do 1/2 or at least 2/3 consistently.

Well I partially blame you.  I decided to just make a target like yours and I feel I shifted aim point a little each shot.   I say that when I know it is true.   If I can get a hand load dialed in I will be able to get them tighter.   It is s mixture of knowing that I can shoot better and I just didn't today.  These will be good before pictures for when it's dialed.

I finally got off my lazy butt to do this thing.   It was so hot and humid (my scope lens fogged up when I took the gun out of the case.   )   Of course, I probably could have done better under better conditions.   Took about 10 minutes to do each run.  Showed up with two (2) ARFCOM MOA All Day targets and 25 rounds for each gun to choot 'em with.

First Gun --

.223 AR-15.  22" SS bull bbl.  Geissele G2S trigger.   Zeiss Victory FL 6-24x56mm.  53 gr. SMK (#1400) over 27.2 gr. of Varget.

1.146, 0.596, 0.926, 1.256, 0.936.  Avg = 0.972"  or 0.928 MOA

I just built the gun last week and it was the first time out with it.

=================================

Second Gun --

.308  RRA LAR-8.  20" heavy bbl.  Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x56mm.  150 gr. SGK Spitzer BT (#2125) over 44.5 gr. of RE-15; and 44.5 gr. Varget (I ran out of RE-15.)

1.162, 1.292, 1.932, 0.922, 1.953.  Avg = 1.45" or 1.38 MOA

A little dissapointed in my performance there.  I really pulled a few shots.  But that's how the cookie crumbled.

Guns --

Had fun.

Looks like your bottom left .308 target in fact groups up into your middle target.  You can pretty clearly see 6 shots in the middle and 4 shots at bottom left.

Could have been.  I've unfolded the frays and can't really tell if those are three shots or two in the right side of the middle bolt face.

We might want to DQ that target.
