Ill prob get bashed but IDC.

Id like to learn about the 17 cal rimfire rounds. I keep seeing them and there seem to be a few different types.

Which one is the one id like, as is more popular?

17HMR is the most popular and is a bad ass round.   17mach 2 is neat but not as impressive.   Others will be along to tell you more, I am sure.   My savage 17HMR TRR is a tack driver.

17HMR is the counterpart to the 22WMR.    17Mach2 is the counterpart to the 22lr.

Good round for plinking, squirrel hunting, etc.   Accurate little round too, unless the wind is blowing.  Get you one, you won't regret it.

Yup, perfect for groundhogs. Though I use my .204 for that now.

I really like my savage in 17 HMR. Its cheap and an absolute tack driver.  I have even taken a few coyotes with it.

Three flavors now for the .17
1.  .17HM2
2.  .17HMR
3.  .17 Winchester Super Magnum

Their .22 counterparts are .22LR, .22 Magnum, God only knows

I have the first two, good luck finding ammo.

Really?  Around here 17 hmr is always on the shelf. Its usually the only thing.
The supermag looks like an awesome cartridge, but I'm not buying a rifle for it until it gets a little more traction and hopefully another ammo manufacturer or two.

This is one of the reasons I ask. I cant find 22lr or 556, but I see 17 HMR everywhere.

It is kind of expensive being such a small caliber 14$ for 50 rounds

Like any other rimfire, weight matching along with rim thickness gauge seperation will net you decent accuracy.

I have the CZ 452, the accuracy is mind boggling. From the bench at 100 yards, it consistently puts 5 shots in a 1 inch orange dot. The only rifle I have ever owned that will do it every time. The great thing about the .17 HMR is how flat the trajectory is, from 25 to 125 yards your point of impact is never more than a half inch different. A .22 LR sighted in at 50 yards drops 6 inches at 100 for comparison. And at 2550 FPS it sizzles!

It has been a good price point roundso far.  Right in the middle of the top of the line 22lr round and bottom line 223 round price. Same story performance wise.

That will probably change with the new 17 winmag.

Agreed. Very accurate and cheap to shoot.

Another vote for the HMR. You will see how powerful they are if you shoot some steel. Like everyone said, scary accurate.

It's funny: I bought a Savage to squirrel hunt with.

First kill, I decided I didn't want to do that anymore and went back to my .22's.  The angle of the shot, I hit it in the neck. On exit it almost ripped the whole shoulder and front leg off. Too much power for a squirrel.

Now I have the rifle, don't use it, and have about 600 rounds of ammo.

I do use it to target shoot though, so it won't go to waste.

like others have said, get the Hmr, flat shooting and fast enough for Groundhogs.
I've had no luck killing anything bigger than a chipmunk with the Mach2.

17HMR is based off the .22 Magnum.

17HM2 is based off the .22 Long Rifle "Stinger" case.  Btw, the 17HM2 (Mach2) kills the crap out of everything the HMR does, but has less range.  Here is a collection of hunt reports I put up using the .17HM2 (Mach2) - Warning, there are graphic images:  http://www.varminter.com/the-17-mach-ii-a-collection-of-hunt-reports-by-eric-a-mayer/

You cannot beat the CZ's for accuracy from an out of the box rifle.

If you reload, skip the rimfires and get a .17 Remington.

Ever since the .17HMR came out you can buy the 20gr bullets to load into it. The factory loads were only over 25gr @ ~4000fps.  The 20gr bullet can be loaded up to about 4400fps.

Yeah, it shoots pretty flat.

Edit: if you don't reload though, get the HMR. It's the only rimfire I still see an abundance of ammo for anywhere I go.
