Prosecutors in Mexico have charged two policemen with raping an Italian woman in the Mexican resort town of Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen

Prosecutors in Quintana Roo say the police officers were arrested over the weekend in the town.

Maria Antonia Salmeron, a spokeswoman with the state's attorney's office of Quintana Roo told CNN the alleged rape occurred on February 12, when the victim and a male companion were leaving a nightclub in Playa del Carmen between 3 and 4 a.m.

The alleged rape happened only eight days after a report of six Spanish tourists were raped in the Mexican beach resort of Acapulco.

While the two officers were already behind bars for insubordination, a municipal police major who is also implicated in the rape managed to flee before he could be arrested, the state AG's office said.

This! I laugh at everyone who says they are going to go to mexico for vacation (or want to, or that I should). Bribes are such a staple in their culture (called mordidas) that the police probably felt they were entitled to it if they didnt get the money.

Edit: oh yeah, everyone likes to point out that the resort towns are safe

Anytime at night, really.  I lived in Mexico for a year, I can count the times I was out after 10:00PM on one hand.

There's a reason why people live in mini-compounds surrounded by concrete walls covered in broken glass there.

I see Canadians DAILY that are going down there...ask them, have you looked at the news down there, seen whats going on lately?

"Oh, no need, it's a resort town, everything is ok."

Same day a resort bus was ambushed, driver dragged off and killed and everyone on the bus was robbed.

There is SO much death in these resort towns and violence, the Mexican government is begging that it doesn't get reported on, State is downplaying the violence down there and the news doesn't want to cover the kidnappings, rapes and murders of tourists down there.

Mexican rape tree's have been found in tourist area's...not just the desert along the border.

ETA: Serious accidents.  Lots of minor accidents that lead to paying a bribe to some traffic cop.

We've been to Playa twice in the last 5yrs.   I always felt safe when I was in the resort.   We never left it the second trip.   We loved the trips.   Fantastic for our marriage, but we won't be going back.    Not worth the risk.

Stupidly, blissfully ignorant people!

If I were you. I'd change the wedding plans to Vegas or the Caribbean. Time to put your foot down! In a nice way, of course.

Something like: "we need to change our plans to (see above). I'm doing this because I love you & care about your safety..With the Caribbean you still get a beautiful beach with palm trees. You don't even need a passport for Puerto Rico & the US Virgin Islands...Honey!"

You can fly direct to Cozumel.  It's much safer there, being an island and all.

I believe it.

Mexico is FUBAR. You can buy a house on the beach there for $75K...I kid you not. There is a reason though, because you wouldn't spend more than one night in that house before being kidnapped without paying for heavy security.

they wil take care of this real fast, especially in the tourist areas.  a few years beck there was a rapist  on the loose in a tourist area.. Gov saw the golden goose of tourism drop like a rock. Did not take long to find someone take the fall.

Vacationers are a prime source of income for these area. They will do whats needed to protect it. The rest of Mexico they could care less about.

It's socialism.

Bribes are how things get done in socialist states.

The State is all powerful and the people are nothing more than subjects. Mexico is EXACTLY where the Democrats want to take this nation. Hillary has said many times that the US should seek to create the "Partnership" between private industry and government that Mexico has.  When Hillary runs in 2016 they should run those speeches of her's when she was down in Mexico with that quote over and over.

My dad had a house in Punta Chivato Baja. Everytime we drove there we had a cooler of soda on ice to give to the police at their checkpoints. The house was taken by some mexican and we no longer go there. This was 15 years ago.

I haven't been there since I was a kid, and we drove over the border for a day to shop and admire the beaches. I would be waaaaayyy too afraid to go there now.

It's a crying shame. It's a beautiful country. If you look at some of the films and TV shows made there, they have beautiful landscapes, beautiful historical buildings, and beautiful estates. But it's just not safe.

I know some people who are either in Mexico (or Latin America) or visit there a lot, and they all lament about the state of the country. They love the country, but they know it's screwed.

I read somewhere that Mexican actors like to work in places like Florida (which has a booming Spanish-language film industry), because "In Florida we don't have to worry about our kids being kidnapped." Doesn't that say something very, very sad to you?

There are some lovely tourist spots in America that have a lot of the same architecture and examples of the culture that you can see in Mexico. (Like the Missions in California for one. And Olvera Street in Los Angeles!) I'd rather go do something touristy there, where I still feel some measure of safety. I know it's not exactly the same thing, and it's not as cheap, but for my peace of mind! It's no fun if you can't feel safe.
