If you find yourself in possession of both a Switchblock and a NSR rail, and often choose to protect your hearing, and those around you by shooting suppressed....

Here's a story of two ranking officials of the ninjadom.

Spikes08 had counseled with me about integrating a Switchblock and a NSR some time ago. In the moment, I suggested ADCO, because of their top notch service. The idea was raised about using a vertical mill I had access to in order to do something neva ben done be fo.

Weeks pass...Spikes catches me in the right mood and we decide to tackle this task. Now bear in mind that neither of us have formal training on a vert mill. So Friday I got a run down from a coworker on how to operate the mill. This coworker would readily tell you he barely knows how to run it himself. I had used it once before to mill the top of small, stainless pneumatic cylinder.

So head forlong into modding a rare and expensive rail?  Sure, why not.

Saturday we chocked it up and took the plunge.

no turning back now....

way past the gates of Mordor

My training had only included running it via the slow/rapid semi-auto controls, but we soon learned how to operate it manually, which allowed for more precise cuts....here I am takin it slow

and again...notice safety glasses....

step 87...

finished product...

Cool, but....Might want to use a chip guard next time you drop your face that close to a workpiece. Safety glasses won't protect much if an end mill comes apart or your workpiece comes flying out of a vise. On the other hand, in the interest of Libertarianism, screw workplace safety...cut away and if the universe wills it, thin the herd.

(Smiley is perfectly appropriate)

The gas tube had to be taken out of the switch block for final assembly. We mounted switch block simultaneously with the NSR. Then fed the gas tube through the upper back towards the switch block.

How is the flex in the forearm?

Think it's weaker and prone to cracking?

You have skills, but from the picture it appears you could have gone tighter with the clearances.

We measured nothing .

In front of the switch block we didn't want the low spot of the rail creating a ledge and allow room to operate with gloves. We had also hoped to cut the space to install switch block without removing gas tube, hence bigger space. We later found out gas tube must be removed for install.

Also see part where no one involved had any meaningful previous experience with a mill.

Rail doesn't flex and don't think it will ever break.  It's a hand guard....for holding the gun.

How are you going to refinish the raw aluminum?

Armalite SASS with a Samson STAR10-13.2 cut to fit around the gas block.

This thread gives me so much hope.  The first time I ever used a plasma cutter, a co-worker showed me how to turn it on and told me not to let the tip touch the surface.  That was the extent of the training.  Later that day, he gave me a quick and dirty lesson on how to use a mig welder

No suppressor in the pics and you weren't brave enough to use a dremmel.

Other than that, good job.

Suppressor had to go back to AAC to replace worn latch. Additional suppressors pending approval now

Why use a dremmel when you have a vertical mill?
