Better yet, how come we don't pronounce the "G" in Bologna?

For that matter, why did my parents insist I call it "baloney"

wrong...lieu tenant..put 'em together, you get, simply, "replacement." Lieutenant is pronounced the same way we do but more "French" sounding.

Leftenant

Some good answers to that question.

My favorite:

In British slang, of which there is a great deal, the word loo refers to a toilet. I assume they do not want to give the impression that a leftenant is a resident of a toilet as in loo-tenant.

IIRC it comes from Spanish "coronel" or something like that. How it got swapped for an L, not sure, but shit like that happens a lot.

Perhaps the most pertinent question.

Try to spell "laboratory" without pronouncing it like the British do--the ohh goes away.
Link Posted: 1/16/2013 2:25:55 AM EST
I like the way British people say al-U-mini-um, even though they're clearly wrong.

Portuguese has had some unusual sound changes especially in Brazil. "R" is pronounced all kinds of different ways in different languages, like the German and French throaty Rs vs. the English soft Rs vs. the Spanish tapped Rs vs. the Russian trilled Rs. Brazilian Portuguese in many dialects started from the throaty R and moved the mouth position around. As an example, many Brazilians would say Rio de Janeiro "Hee-o djee zhaneroo"
