The arrow/bolt may not weigh much, but it's being accelerated to 200 miles an hour in over a foot or two of distance. That's breaking a lot of inertia.

Although the bolt may not weigh much, because of the very rapid acceleration to a very high speed, it DOES still provide a lot of resistance to the string. Maybe without that resistance there, the bow gets damaged.

Just a theory from someone who's shot a bow about 10 times and a crossbow never.

It's not the resistance, it's the conversion of energy from potential (the pulled bowstring) and kinetic (the flying arrow).

If you dry fire any bow, the sudden release of potential energy has nowhere to go except back into the bow. Calamity ensues.

We usually hunt around the lakes and get there by boat.  Come out of the woods, shoot downward into the water, pick it up once you're in the boat.
A shaft with a tip tightened on will be practically sealed and will float.
