I guess they didn't cover this during my MSF class in June. I've been wondering what on earth they mean when someone gives you hand signals. Is there something I should or shouldn't do? I've found this, but I'm worried I'll do something I'd regret due to my noobiness.

I only use them if I think the police are around.
When you're on a bike everyone is out to murder you anyway. Depending on a driver to comprehend a turn signal before you make a movie is just asking to be road kill. |

What do you ride? Ninja 250 You're actually in a comfortable place to figure things out then. Geek wave to everyone, especially the scooter mafia. It's expected. The only exception...dudes on a Suzuki Savage wearing the full blown Gay Pirate costume. Don't even think about it. |

Meh.
There are basically three categories in the laws of equity:
1. Brand equity. This means that if you both are riding the same brand of bike, the odds of a wave transaction are increased. 2. Style equity. If you both are riding the same "type" of bike, such as chopper, rocket or touring motorcycle, then your odds are increased as well. 3. Helmet equity. If you both are either wearing or not wearing helmets - odds increased again. To further illustrate this concept: IF you both are riding hardtail Harleys and not wearing helmets, the odds of a hand gesture between the two of you are VERY high. Conversely, the odds of a nonhelmeted hardtail rider waving to a helmeted Suzuki rocket rider are almost next to none. In La. we have to wear helmets but I do actually ride a chopped, kick start, ape hanger'd, hardtail Harley, and I wave to all with the #3 wave they list. #1: Lot's of noobs out there, some stall out in an intersection and can't get it started back up because they are hitting the horn button instead of the starter. They don't take their hands off the bars to wave. #2: I do the "two-finger flip" if I'm using the clutch lever at the moment. #3: They say #2 is the most common but #3 is what I see most. #4: Been riding since I was 16 and have never witnessed that. #5: I see that often from the passenger and as mentioned in the article, moped or scooter riders. That's fine, they're riding. Quoted:
I don't wave to Harley riders. Assholes. How rebellious of you, showing those HOG chapter members how big of a man you are. |

Hadn't seen that photo before. The chain and padlock hanging from the swingarm looks like a recipe for disaster. |

I'll wave at you, unless you're wearing flip flops or your arms are held high on ape-hangers.
I can't laugh and wave at the same time. |

I wave to everyone. Get scowled at a lot by cruiser riders though. I don't get it. Guess they think I look stupid in all my gear. I must be low on the bike hierarchy with my Yeahmeha.

Im a Honda Shadow rider, the group I ride with is respectful towards each other but also brutal to eachother in that special .mil way so it makes it fun as shit.... Course all Gaijin have a universal hatred (besides cops) and that is the punk ass Busa gangs off base. |

Never understood the whole wave thing. Dumb as hell. As a newb, I though the wave thing was kinda cool. Kind of a "you're now in the club" type of thing. Now I'm getting to the point where waving it too much work. I don't want to be on the lookout for other bikers; I want to enjoy the road. I rarely bother waving anymore, but if I happen to notice someone waving, I'll wave back to be polite. Otherwise, waving is dumb. |

Us pickup owners need to come up with our own wave.
The other day I'm waiting for a motorcycle to go by before pulling out on the highway. He's got his hand stretched out pointing to the left. Hell I thought he was signaling to turn left, but he was waving at another motorcycle on the other side of the highway. |
|
The pickup truck wave around here is raising your index finger off the steering wheel. It's very subtle. I've seen it out in the mountains in one area too.
|
|
The only hand signal commonly seen around here is the extended middle finger. Could someone please translate?

I get that peace sign all the time from Harley guys as I pass them, and Im not even riding a harley or any motorcycle for that part. I guess they dont limit it to just other Harley riders.

If not .... |

Hey, don't pick on the Geezerwing rider... he can't find the "wave" button!! |
|
My bike is daily transportation and offroad fun it is not a lifestyle or brotherhood or a social tool. I do get sick of the wavers everyday but wave back because I am not an asshole...well I am an asshole but not to strangers. I don't utilize any other hand gestures. I will sometimes initiate a wave to a fellow single cylinder DualSport rider battling the freeway winds and traffic. |
