A Columbia man faces two counts of grand larceny charges for allegedly stealing 726 Apple iPod touch media players and 49 laptops worth about $160,000 from the Amazon distribution center in Cayce, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
Todd Anthony Cofield, Jr., 20, a former employee of Amazon, turned himself in to authorities on Thursday after arrest warrants were issued on two counts of grand larceny involving items worth more than $10,000.
Arrest warrants allege that between April 20 and May 9 Cofield stole the media players from a freight trailer that he was entrusted to unload at the Amazon distribution center.
Police say Cofield also stole 49 Hewlett Packard mini laptop computers from a freight trailer on May 31.
Cofield did not unload the iPods or laptops from the freight trailers and submitted false documents to Amazon claiming he had unloaded them, according to the sheriff’s department.
FedEx Freight and security guards at the distribution center reported the stolen items to the sheriff’s department.
Cofield was released from the Lexington County Detention Center on Friday after posting bail totaling $50,000.
