Ed Witten, Institute for Advanced Study
Here is a pic of him with Hawking. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gross_Witten_Hawking_TIFR_2001.jpg |

KeithJ....
Really I think he made Stephen back when he was younger and not the best at everything... Like legs. |
Hawking, unless he is in the room with Barack Hussein Obama.
EVERYBODY knows Obama is the SMARTEST MAN IN THE ROOM. |
I always wanted to see them put Stephen Hawking on that "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" show.
When my son was 10 months old, he was smarter than Hawking because my kid learned how to walk. Haven't seen ol Steve pick up on that yet.
You know that Hawking was wrong about his most critically acclaimed theory, right?
I think they give the guy too much credit because of his condition.

Quoted:
Hugh Hefner. That guy really had it figured out. I gotta agree with this |
Quoted:
You know that Hawking was wrong about his most critically acclaimed theory, right? Wasn't he one of those who helped prove it wrong and then went about reworking it? |
Quoted:
I'm not smarter but I can outrun that mofo. A dead hooker can out run him. |

Quoted:
You know that Hawking was wrong about his most critically acclaimed theory, right? Was that the one about information being able to escape from a black hole? |

There is no such thing as the smartest person, and even those who we consider giants of knowledge can be wrong and disagreed with
I once had a debate with a Nobel laureate in grad school. While he was extremely smart and very gracious to me, to this day I still believe him to be wrong on the issue, I was just excited that I held my own. There is no such thing as the smartest person, those who we consider smart have flaws in their thinking just like you and me. Stephen Hawking is a very smart individual in his field, but that does not make him the smartest person. |

I think they give the guy too much credit because of his condition. bingo...hawking's entire career is based on a small slice of anomaly from general relativity.. in the bigger picture, hawking will be a tiny blip in the history of physics |

Quoted: When my son was 10 months old, he was smarter than Hawking because my kid learned how to walk. Haven't seen ol Steve pick up on that yet. I hope your son doesn't lose he ability to walk like Hawking did. |

Ed Witten, Institute for Advanced Study Here is a pic of him with Hawking. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gross_Witten_Hawking_TIFR_2001.jpg He is smart............. In 1968 Witten published an article in The Nation arguing that the New Left had no strategy. |
This guy is very smart. Reminds me of an old Army buddy. |
This guy Michio Kaku |
Quoted:
This guy Michio Kaku Naah! I am smarter than him. I don't believe in significant anthropogenic Global Warming. |
As far as physicists go, he probably isn't even in the top 50 right now. Smarter than 99.999% of the population does not mean he is the smartest man alive. Hawking basically predicted that a black hole will convert its mass into radiation and then disappear. I won't deny that he is an authority on singularities, but no, he is no where near the "smartest" man alive

Quoted: When my son was 10 months old, he was smarter than Hawking because my kid learned how to walk. Haven't seen ol Steve pick up on that yet. Classless... |
He might be the smartest astrophysicist, but there are others who are at the top of their own respective fields.
Garrett Lisi may be the most intelligent human on the planet...but he is also one of the strangest.
He lives on Maui or in Nevada, depending on the surf and snow. 44 y/o author of "An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything" His theories are still in peer review. The Large Hadron Collider at CERN may prove he is not just a flake. |

Hawking is probably the smartest living man IN HIS PARTICULAR FIELD.
But overall? Probably not. |

Our own Zhukov because that bitch Hawking don't know 'bout lactricity
He's not really that well respected in the world of physics. I see him like a Richard Dawkins. Popular with the public, not too popular with scientists.

Not to toot my own horn, but I believe I am deserving of some credit for my work in developing the Periodic Table Of Vegetables. The phrase "I can count to potato" was once the punch line to a tired old internet meme, but is now seen as having real intellectual impact in the field of vegetable science.
