FWIW there are buttons for adding and deleting albums and uploading pix, but none of them seem to work for me. |

I remember the first time I saw pictures from Vietnam. A guy I worked for was at DaNang, and had been moved to Hue City during the Tet Offensive. I was just a kid, but I remember thinking, It looks just like any other city. Gas stations, stores, billboards, etc. I didn't even realize then what I was looking at. After I got older he showed me some more graphic pictures, then I realized that everybody in that city it seemed, was either killing someone, or getting killed by someone. I started studying the war more after that. I developed a healthy respect, and admiration for all the folks who served there.

some more of Edsr's. Letter to my sister (EdSr's) FREE stamps means we were on the government's teat! Grey haired man by the jeep is general Westmoreland on one of those rare occasions when he came to see us.If you look closely, you can see all his stars on the collar Teaching the 2 other guys to set up and operate a portable personnel radar. You could identify people crawling, walking, running, jeep,2 ton,etc by the sound that came back |

It was very satisfying work to know that what we did every day meant that our boys were going to go home safe. It was especially gratifying when we went way out into the boonies, where no sane man would go, to rescue the LRRP's when they got in trouble. Those guys have big balls of solid brass to go out in such small teams to do what they do. |

Here's a few more pictures I have. These are of the once quaint and beautiful little provincial town of An Loc in 1972. In early April of that year An Loc was surrounded by close to 6 Divisions of NVA, all with the latest Russian-built equipment and fought for three months for their survival. It was mostly U.S. Air Power that held the enemy off, but the ARVN fought well too. There was a handful of about 10 U.S. Advisers on the ground directing much of the battle. During the battle the town was receiving 6,000 to 9,000 rounds a day of enemy incoming artillery, rockets and mortars. By the end, the NVA had suffered a humiliating defeat losing almost all the soldiers in 4 1/2 Divisions. Countless numbers of main battle tanks, track-mounted anti-aircraft and other armored vehicles were destroyed by the relentless U.S Air effort.
An Loc looking from North toward the South early in the battle. QL 13 (Thunder Road) stretches to the South.
The center of town ravaged by battle. Note the Cobra flying low level high in the center.
More pictures in the center of town. Note the destroyed enemy tanks littering the street everywhere.
More battle damage with dead NVA tanks.
Here's what it looked like from the cockpit when we flew into town each day. ![]() |

I forget exactly when the Army's personal appearance standards changed in the late 1960s, but it was after i was in AIT at Fort Boredom "Gordon"..
and again in the early 70s.. BUT: it used to be that any part of the mustache (de rigeur for chopperjockeys) that extended beyond the corners of the mouth could not go below the corner of the mouth... and there were some genuinely BADASS handlebars out there. Flared sideburns were not a problem for a while, as long as they didn't go below where the ear root meets the head. Then, "some folks" got away with chops which almost met their handlebars. I worked around a Warrant Officer who looked it up in the regs after the First Sergeant challenged him on his 'tache, and the Wobbly Two decided that he would grow his cookie duster straight out... perpendicular to the front of his face.... he looked like he had a whiskbroom between his upper lip and nostrils. Good times, good soldiers, and no disparaging today's folks. and haircuts stateside were only $.50 at the PX barbershops then... mustache trim was $.15 in the old days...... |

Here's a picture of one of the scout pilots when I was in the Cav. up at Camp Holloway in Pleiku. He was a 1st Lt. as I recall. I couldn't muster a mustache because I was so young, but those that could in the Cav. did so proudly. The lobsters we bought down at Nha Trang for about $5 for four or five of them. Notice the snappy living accomodations. Those were the BOQ's

Yep, 40mm Grenade Launcher, 450 rounds per minute out of that beauty. Also a 7.62mm minigun on the other side of the turret next to the 40 mike-mike.
