From CNN

Washington (CNN) –– The U.S. State Department shuttered its embassy in Syria and pulled out its remaining staff Monday after the government refused to address its security concerns, senior State Department officials tell CNN.

...

Poland will serve as the U.S. protecting power in Syria, just as Turkey protected U.S. interests in Libya when the embassy there was closed. Switzerland serves as protecting power for the United States in Iran.

So when does Israel start to let the bodies hit the floor in both Iran and Syria with the US' help?  End of the month at the latest?

It could definitely be a prelude to another "kinetic military action" or whatever they are calling them nowadays but there's certainly some serious turmoil in Syria. The government is blaming Al Qaeda and Islamic terrorists, the opposition is saying the government is behind them but stuff keeps blowing up over there; two suicide bombings in late December and another one in January.

Al-Assad isn't a friend but on the other hand I don't think that the opposition is exactly a bunch of peaceful students who just want freedom. If the US wants to play the white knight and oust another despotic government it might just make things worse.
