Or is it pretty much 9mm and .40 S&W now.

Bridgeport CT is switching over to M&P 45's from Sig 229's in .40.
Some departments around here allow the officers to carry .40 or .45. There's one in my hometown that still carries his 1911.
believe the Nebraska State patrol has switched over to Glock 21 SFs for everyone
used to be you could get a G22 if you wanted |
I see sheriff's deputies around here sometimes with 1911s. Texas Rangers used to carry 1911s and may still, but Troopers are issued Sig P229 DAKs in Sig .357.
Aurora,CO allows offcers to carry from an approoved list of which is the 1911. My hometown of Loveland, CO ISSUES Kimber.45's

In central NC it seems that most of the city PD agencies are issued 40SW. All of the sheriff Depts are issued 45 ACP.
The type of guns vary from dept to dept. I've seen everything from Glock, MP to Sig. Also seen some 1911's from various manufactures. NC State Highway Troopers are issued the MP in 357 Sig. Beretta use to be a popular choice but I haven't seen any of those in a few years |
Gulfport (MS) PD was issuing Glock 21s at one time. They also had 22s for those who couldn't handle the 21.

One of my old college professors works for Aventura PD. He carries a Glock 21. I dunno if that's department issue or an approved personally owned alternate. IIRC, I was told that Aventura also has approved the 1911 for duty use, but it's not issued. I might be wrong on the department.
Aventura PD is run by a very pro gun chief and is committed to continued training for officers. They've been able to get Magpul Dynamics to come down to train their officers twice a year. |

Calgary police are in the process of testing Kimber Pro-Carry TLE. Some are already issued, the LEO's here are hoping they become standard issue. They want the better stopping power of the heavier round, and the more controllable recoil over their Glock's.
Not trying to bash any weapon, this info was provided to me by a good friend who is on the police force. |

Fort Lee NJ had 4506s for years. I think they swapped them out for .40s recently. One of the other Bergen County towns, River Edge or somewhere nearby, also had them. A friend of mine was the armorer for Allendale years ago when they decided to replace their .38 Specials.
He said, "Get .45s." "Oh, no, no, no," was the answer. "That's too much recoil." So they got .357 Magnums instead. |
Glock 21s for Charleston and North Charleston (SC) PDs.
I'm jealous. |
Sheriff of Comanche County, OK walks around with his 1911 cocked and locked, with a set of custom Alumagrips.
I'm issued an M&P .45 loaded with Ranger Ts.
I guard the coin supply... |
My dept was always 9 and then 40, but my son-in-law is on Buckingham PD in Buck Co PA and they carry para LDAs in 45. Our chief thought 45 was "too much gun" for us.

At least a few years ago (2005) Maine State police were issued the HK USP in .45. An unusual gun and caliber choice.
ETA- Here's a pretty typical "we need new guns" article from 2011 stating "they're so old they could fail" and that replacing the night sights costs $500 per gun... http://bangordailynews.com/2011/06/19/politics/state-police-to-get-replacement-pistols/ |

When I started I carried a personal Sig 220. I was required to switch to an issued gun about 6 years ago and now carry a Sig 226 in 357 Sig. I really miss my 45 late at night when I'm working alone. Pa State Police issue a Glock in 45 Gap now

Neighboring town switched to G21s a few years back. I think my town did the same, don't recall.

Arkansas State Police, Glock 21 SF with Golden Saber 185 grain bullets

My brother carries a 1911 or a G21 depending on his mood that day.

A friend in the Kansas State Capitol Police was issued a Glock 21 (about 10 or more yrs ago). She fell in love with my 30 and eventually bought one. Don't know if she carried it.

.45ACP is either issued or an option for several Alaskan departments.
Met a SLCPD officer carrying an Ed Brown in .45. I believe the department allows personal choice as approved by the armorer.

CCSO is 1911s in .45 for duty weapons.
Some of the sergeant's and LT's weapons are NICE! |
Lawton PD in OK issues Glock 21 for regular duty use and Glock 30's for some other areas
I believe Ogden, UT Metro SWAT Team carries 1911's.
That's about right. eta- that's Utah's Official State Gun. |
Local PD issues Glock 21SF, but they do allow officers to carry another model if the Glock is to big for their hands.
I believe the Kansas Highway Patrol also just switched to Glock 21s. A town a few miles over issued SIGs in .357 SIG, they recently bought all new Glocks but kept the .357 SIG as the issue caliber. |

Guilford County Sheriffs Department recently switched from Glock 21's the the M&P 45 ACP's. The SRT guys or whatever you call them carry the hi-cap STI 1911's. They went away from 40 several years ago.
PTI Airport PD are still carrying Glocks in 45 GAP I believe. Unless they have changed lately. Most of the other PD's around here are 357 Sig as is the NCSHP. Not sure what High Point PD is carrying. |
