Large work organization.  They always have a large party where I as a member/employee must attend, and family is strongly urged to attend.  Santa has always been a white guy, my kids have always seen Santa there, as a white guy.  My kids are still young enough to believe strongly in Santa. I figure we may have one or two more years of this magic and their belief gives me quite a bit of joy as a dad.

So this year they chose a different color guy to play santa.  Now it doesn't matter what color he is, just that the color is different than last year and the year before, and the kids will be close, face to face in his lap. I know this will prompt questions and belief problems.... If he had always been black Santa, then changing him to white Santa would be the same problem, as my kids would notice he was different than last year and then would suspect he is just a guy in a suit.  I know and like the guy chosen.

We left before I would have any splainin to do with the kids.

Tell me how awful I am Arfcom.

Take them to a department store with a santa that fits the mythos you've built for them.

I think this is the best COA.  the kids have black and hispanic friends, and the concept of many helpers will probably fly.

Do you think Santa's got enough time to be in every mall AND make all the work office parties?  Santa and Simon LeGree are up at the North Pole maximizing the Elf's output now that the Christmas Lists are coming in.  He outsources all the office parties to non-union, foriegn labor.  He's Santa, but not THE SANTA.

Better not let them watch any cartoons, either

Edit: I suppose it depends on how your comment is taken. Fantasy and creativity are critical parts of childhood development, and this is a harmless way to spawn them.  A person in his 30s who believes in Santa Clause has issues. A six year old doesn't.

Reminds me of a story my father told me about Viet Nam, where a black soldier dressed up as Santa and announced,

"I'm from the SOUTH Pole!"

It also reminds me of what my mother told me when we read stories, such as the Chinese getting ready to welcome the kitchen God on a special day. Mom told me that was just the way they saw our God.

Take it all in stride and remember, Santa has a lot of helpers.

You teach your kids that cartoons are real? Or is it entertainment?

That's what I'm saying, if you teach your kids that Santa/X-Mas is just a stupid fantasy story to have an excuse to expect gifts, sure, have at it. But teaching them that Santa is real is bullshit, lying to your kids, and a lot of parents do it.
