"Christopher Ochoa, a 20-year-old from French Camp, Calif., and a friend were hiking through a field in Western Oregon on the way to Silver Creek Falls Park on Friday evening.

Ochoa was wearing dark-colored clothing when an Oregon man hunting for bear with his 12-year-old grandson saw something moving in the brush and fired one shot from a .270-caliber rifle, striking Ochoa, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said."

Since when does "hunter" automatically equal "fudd"? It seems like some people that are anti-hunting have hijacked the term.

The correct term in this case would be "dumbass".

I must have missed the evidence for the hunter calling for any kind of weapons ban.  Because that's what "Fudd" means:  gun owners who support bans of scary looking rifles to save their hunting guns.

Just fine for black bear, which is all that are on the west coast of the lower 48

With proper bullets it is just fine for elk

Is it not fair to stay stupidity on both parts?  Hunting season for bears..dark clothing...hiking randomly in the woods..gets shot?  It sucks and the guy hunting needs to learn..well he lost that opportunity..but he should of learned to better figure out how to hunt and learn proper gun safety.  Still, lack of intelligence was apparent on both sides from what I can tell.

Every hunter knows that other people use the woods for things other than hunting.

ID is absolutely mandatory!!

Last deer season I had a big deer coming in at a gallop, on the dirt road I always see them on, I had seen this big buck gallop down this dirt road more than once,

I saw brown and a small amount of white coming through the trees 15 minutes after sunset. I could hear him blowing once in a while.

I had the shotgun at low ready and safety on waiting for a positive ID.and followed him at a low ready waiting for the positive ID and a clear shot

At 40 yards I got that positive ID of some asshat wearing brown and white jogging through the woods

In Alabama it's required to wear a certain amount of bright orange in the woods if you are moving any distance during any of the hunting seasons.  Don't, and you can get a pricy ticket and escorted out of the woods by a possum cop.  And if you aren't wearing orange and get shot, you could be found at fault for the shooting.

Most, if not all states make the wearing of fluorescent orange clothing mandatory during any big game hunting season whether you are actually hunting or not.  This is why the guy won't be charged.

Actually, gun accidents have been going down for years.

http://www.sooeveningnews.com/news/x664190765/No-hunter-deaths-during-Mich-deer-firearm-season

As the 2009 hunting season winds down, the Department of Natural Resources reports that the Nov. 15-30 firearm season was the safest on record in Michigan with no fatalities. Only one hunting fatality — during the spring turkey season — was reported the entire 2009 hunting season, DNR Law Enforcement Division records show.
“Michigan has seen a continued drop in hunter casualty incidents since implementation of mandatory hunter education and mandatory hunter orange laws,” said Sgt. Jon Wood, program supervisor for the DNR’s Hunter Education Program.
The 2009 hunting season recorded 12 hunting-related accidents, and just one fatality. In 2005, the DNR recorded 19 accidents with three fatalities; and in 2000, there were seven fatalities and 32 accidents.
In 1950, the department recorded 25 fatalities and 190 accidents.
Hunter safety training became mandatory for first-time hunters ages 12-16 in 1971; while wearing hunter orange became law in 1977. In 1970, there were 18 fatalities and 212 accidents. Ten years later, the number of fatalities dropped to nine, while the number of accidents decreased to 107.

“Most of the credit goes to the nearly 3,000 Michigan volunteer Hunter Education instructors across the state,” Wood said.
“Without their dedication and professionalism, the sport of hunting would not be as safe as it is now.”
Another significant reason for the continued drop in fatalities and accidents is the active role Michigan conservation officers take in educating hunters in the classroom and in the field, said DNR Law Enforcement Chief Gary Hagler.

http://badgerherald.com/news/2010/11/30/2nd_time_in_state_hi.php

For only the second time in Wisconsin state history, no one was killed during gun deer season except for deer.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday gun deer season was casualty-free for the first time since 1974.

However, 12 people were injured, according to a DNR statement.

Wisconsin typically has lower fatality rates than other states during the deer hunting season, said Bob Manwell, a DNR spokesperson.

Over the past 10 years, the state has averaged 1.9 shooting deaths per year, while nationally the number is three per year, Manwell said.

Manwell added a lot of credit goes to the thousands who volunteer to teach public gun safety courses.

For black bear yes, it will do the job. For browns, it's not recommended.I knew a guy who used a .270 on an Alaskan brown. He shot his gun empty, the bear charged and the guide finished it off. Combination of underpowered ans questionable shot placement(The taxidermist did a good job of hiding the bulletholes and the hunter wouldn't tell me where the bear was hit.)

From what I can find IA doesn't. All I can find is orange is required while hunting deer or upland game. No gun or bow=not hunting.

More than two, unless the dead guy and the hunter had no family or friends.

All this, because someone couldn't have the patience to see what he was shooting at.  The hiker is absolutely blameless.  Sure, it would be a good idea to wear orange, but even then, if it isn't visible through brush you are STILL getting shot.

It doesn't even make sense to shoot at something you can't see.  All the effort and time is wasted if you miss and it runs away.

Shitty hunter? check
