Having a poll with AJ Hawk is bad.  Not even the top on his team.  Oh yea another vote for Ray Nitschke.  Guy was a beast and mean as a 2 headed rattle snake.

Waren Sapp ?

Not sure if he was a linebacker, but he did hurt a few people's feelings once or twice.

Sapp was a Defensive Tackle.

Best hit I ever saw in person at a football game was the hit he laid on Kurt Warner after Kurt Warner threw an interception. It was a Monday Night Football Game in Tampa. Warner tried to tackle the DB returning the interception and Warner never saw Sapp coming. Sapp hit him like a train and Warner hit the turf like a sack of wet potatoes.

Like him or not, Ray Lewis will be the best linebacker of all time. The numbers will back it up.

I have a Jack Lambert story for you.

A classmate of mine played college football in the Mid-America Conference.  My buddy's coach was Myron Pottios who once played linebacker for the Steelers and the Redskins.

Pottios was friendly with Jack Lambert and Coach Pottios invited Lambert to talk to the team.  Well one of the players wasn't listening properly and Lambert slugged the guy knocking him unconscious.

Then Lambert started screaming and he got angrier and angrier to the extent that his eyes rolled back in his head and he started slobbering and  drooling.

Jack Lambert was and is insane.  He was beyond mean.

Randy White was a failure at LB. He was however an excellent tackle.

While not quite in the company of those listed Lee Roy Jordan had his moments.

The meanest, or the best?  Woody Hayes once said that Randy Gradishar was the best football player he ever coached, period.  Gradishar did yeoman service for the Broncos back in the day... he belongs in the hall of fame.

I played high school football against Gradishar. IIRC, it was the same year I saw Butkus play in a preseason game at the Cleveland stadium. I'm pretty sure I saw Butkus play in 1969, but it may have been 1968.

Anyway, I know that I played Gradishar in 1969. My brother covered him man-to-man that game.

I remember one play where Gradishar picked up a fumble on a dead run. My brother, one other guy, and I all hit him hard while he was off balance and still leaning over. Three of us hit him at the same time and he still gained about 5 yards! Gradishar was an awesome player.

I always felt sorry for Butkus because he was so good but played on loser teams. I was in awe just to attend a game in which he played.

One of the guys on my high school team played for Ohio State with Jack Tatum. He told me some stories about how hard Jack hit even in practice.

Of course, Jack Lambert played at Kent State in the early 1970's. He was born in the same town where I lived as a young lad.

There is a lot of good football played in Ohio.

I met a guy who worked with Butkus as some kid of medical personnel on the Bears back in the 70's. So of course I asked him what it was like. The first thing that came out of his mouth was "I didn't look at him. Nobody did." and he was dead serious lol. It wasn't just an act. He really was a nasty SOB.

I dare say that, as a team the Pittsburgh Steelers have had more talent at linebacker than any team...by a margin:

Jack Lambert (1974-84)
Andy Russell (1963-76)
Greg Lloyd (1987-97)
Jack Ham (1971-82)
Joey Porter (1999-06)
James Farrior (2002-PRESENT)
Levon Kirkland (1992-00)
Jason Gildon (1994-03)
James Harrison (2002-PRESENT)
Kevin Greene (1993-96)
Chad Brown (1993-96, 2006)
Earl Holmes (1996-01)

What team can boast a list of talent at linebacker that can compare to that?

BS Night train Lane and Jack Tatum, they wouldn't just hit people, they tried to kill and cripple people.  Tatum was partially successful in paralying someone for life.

Daryl Stingley.  I'm not saying it was a great or glorious thing, but the Assassin was named such for a reason.

well he certainly didn't try to paralyze him

You never read the book "they call me assassin" have you?  He goes into quite a lot of detail that he indeed tried to hurt people as bad as he could each time he hit them.  He may not have wanted to paralyze him per se, but he sure as hell would hit people like he was trying to.  He was successful in ending that guys career, and even after that he didn't change.

Mike Singletary

Butkus.

He used to curse at his defensive linemen for making tackles.

He expected them just to stop the runner's forward motion and keep them propped up until he could come flying in and try to knock their heads off.
