Banks aren't forced to play the game the same way we do and they can hold those houses for a long time as an asset . As long as people keep buying like they are right now there won't b another bust like last time. I think prices will stay about the same until 2013-2014 until The next presidents policy of not being a communist starts to have an impact then prices will go back up because sales will start happening a lot faster than foreclosures. |

I love that people from the east assume that Phoenix and the surrounding metro area is all dirt roads and hitching posts and complain that there's nothing to do. Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the US, folks-bigger than Philly. There are nearly 5 million people in the metro area. There are art galleries, movie houses, fantastic restraunts, all the outdoor stuff you could want, beautiful weather for 8 months out of the year (ok, so the other 4 are kind of toasty, but that's the price you pay for Christmas in shorts and a t-shirt), plus we've got some of the best gun laws in the country. Also, the largest MG shoot in the US is here, about a 4 hour drive from the east valley. A good number of illegals bugged the fuck out over 1070 and our other anti-illegal laws. Don't take that to mean that there are NO illegals, because there's still a shitload of them, but quite a large percentage moved to more illegal friendly pastures. You'll be just fine not knowing spanish. Other than when I was in high school, I've lived in AZ my entire life, and I've NEVER needed to speak spanish. |

Yeah, how do I know you never have been to Phoenix? First off, pick a good neighborhood. That goes without saying. It can go from dodgy, to nice, to dodgy, to great, in only a couple of blocks. That's really anywhere though. You definitely want to do some first hand recon before you commit, and ask around in the HTF about an area. I've met maybe a dozen HTF guys since I've been out here, and everybody is cool. If you stay the fuck out of Guadalupe and the immediate surrounding area, there's no real need for Spanish. There's a lot of people out here who don't speak English as their born or primary language, but for day to day commerce, you're fine. The guy running the check out at Walmart might not be a native English speaker, but he does know English, so you can talk to him. And I haven't found Mexicans to be overly obnoxious or in your face. Mostly, they're like everybody else, they just blend in, go about their day, and leave you alone. Leave me alone and I'll leave you alone. Again though, I don't live, work, or play in the barrio. I don't speak a lick of Spanish and I've yet to feel hindered. Jobs. If you're not overly particular to start out, and you just want some cash flow, jobs are a dime a dozen out here. Seriously, I had a job less than a week after I moved out here. It doesn't pay a lot, and it's hard work, but it is work, and I do get a check every week. I've had maybe 6 or so other interviews, I turned down one job, and I'm about to quit one I started two days ago and just focus on the first one I got right after I got out here. Hell, the guy who owns the place won't leave me alone. It's a rare day that I don't get a text asking if I want to put in some work the next day. Financially, it's slow death, but it'll work until I can hook a real job. All I do is just troll Craigslist for a few minutes a day and send out a resume if it looks like a good job. Most weekdays, 2-300 jobs a day pop up on the Phoenix Craigslist. All different kinds. You'll be fine if you're not a total fuck. But other than that, come your ass down here. I moved from Illinois three weeks ago and I've got no regrets. Arizona is God's land, for sure. If you can watch a sunset out here and not think it's direct evidence that God wants you to be happy, you're just an asshole. That's kinda what I'm looking for. Just a paycheck while I go to school I'm no stranger to dirty work and/or grunt work. |

We left her Tacoma half way up the road and walked the rest of the way down the road. We ran into a few people gathering up mudbugs for a boil...was it you? Was also down there about a month before that in my Jeep Rubicon. Drove it all the way down and onto the sandbar. Was quite a few people down there that day on quads and Rhinos. Been going down there for 30 years now, since I was a kid. Use to camp all weekend w/out seeing a soul back in the early 80's. |

Been thinking about it myself all summer. Actually had a trip tentatively planned before now to check out the Phoenix area but got slammed with a shit ton of work, so I'm busy at the moment.
I still plan to recon the area just as soon as I get the chance. Work is picking up like crazy lately and I just can't turn it down, been awhile since I was this busy.

I love Phoenix. Someday I hope I can move there.
I recommend the OP not move there because I need that spot. Yes, it is hot 3 months of the year and fantastic weather 9 months. However, in MN we have 9 months of crappy weather followed by 3 months of slightly less crappy weather. I visit Phoenix once or twice a year and it is never enough. |

Acclimation is a hard thing to imagine coming from Maine. It will be below freezing tonight (eta-here) and it's barely October. I visited AZ for the first time, last week of March, this year. I beat the shit out of my truck for 40 minutes to get out of my driveway, ( ice and snow storm) to race an hour+ to Portland to catch my flight. Within 25 minutes of arrival in Phoenix I was achieving sunburn on my nose. 
Rented a motorcycle for the week, what a f-ing blast. Rode several thousand miles. I could type out a detailed encounter, but I'm bushed, long day and another long one coming tomorrow. I think what I was going to say, is, the most striking part of AZ to me, was how it changes so quickly. 100 degrees in Phoenix, Tucson, Tombstone. Went up the 666, Coronado Highway or whatever, at 10,000 plus elevation, it was below freezing when I hopped on the bike that morning. I was well prepared with warm clothes+.
Hot as hell again riding Wupatki ? area. Sleeted the whole time I was at Grand Canyon, hot as shit, Sedona. Rained a little when I was in Flagstaff, decent (by my standards )temp, but the day after I rode out of town, I think they got like 18" of snow.
Back to Phoenix, still hot as shit, and I'm not a city guy, nightly news reports creeped me out, not used to that. I must have taken 1000+ pictures in Arizona, I'm extraordinarily partial to Maine, but AZ was beyond impressive for me. |

biggest "bad" thing that struck me was how EVERYONE told me to stay the fuck away from the border.
From the time I landed, everyone say there's no state or national park, monument or anything worth seeing down there. Too dangerous. Drug smuggling, human smuggling. Was told by everyone, DON'T go within 10 miles of border. That was fine by me, I never strayed south of touristy Tombstone. One night having dinner somewhere near Tombstone iirc, a real big guy, "stereotypical" biker, wearing his MC club stuff, open carry all the way, real nice guy, lifelong AZ resident, he didn't strike me as a "costume wearing" biker, when I asked him about the "ten mile from the border" looked me in the eye and said sincerely, " Don't go down there, I wouldn't, it's SCARY"
Good enough for me, 98% of what I saw was a-ok. eta, locals were always good to me, I have some , a lot of, questions about the Native Americans, subject for another thread, I don't want to hijack from the OPs query. |

I live near South Mountain and there are plant nurseries, horse boarding farms and landscaping companies all around me. |

The city is HUGE... seriously it doesn't look that big like everything in the desert until you realize that "5 mile" road is really "20 miles." Southeast, towards Chandler/Gilbert East, towards Scottsdale. McDowell Mountains in the background. South, towards downtown. If my camera was better, you'd see downtown better, but it's roughly 13 miles away from where I took the pictures, and in person, you can see it pretty clearly. Great pics, thanks for posting. |

This thread makes me happy. I just spent a week driving and camping around AZ, from AK. I was thinking of moving there soon, as I'm almost done with the .mil, and the trip just got rid of any doubts I might have had. Going to ASU next fall and then see how things look.. but I really liked the Flagstaff area a lot.
But Tempe is a fucking goldmine for gorgeous women. ASU here I come!

critters don't bother me. illegals do bother me. I refuse to learn Spanish. How bad is the job market there compared to WA? there are jobs here. just not in the construction and housing industry. That got hit hard here. IIRC There aren't any of those jobs anywhere in the country. Also, not single anymore. I have a very lovely young girlfriend who likes shooting.
