I'm gonna stick with my Speer Gold Dots. You can ask our own Blitz_308 since he took a couple rounds in the hand from a perp... did some nasty damage for what little it touched. Oh and fuck that POS that's rotting in prison.
Hey Blitz! |

The only 2 that get the nod from the "best choices in self defense ammo" are Speer Gold Dot 135gr +P (53921) and Corbon 110 gr JHP DPX.
I use the DPX. http://ammo.ar15.com/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ/index.htm#.38spl/.357mag |

The 357 model 19 frame is the same frame as the 38 special frame of the model 10 and 15. I know my S&Ws. K Frame. My favorite Smith frame. I wouldn't call the 19 a .357 but rather a .38 that can fire some .357s. That frame wasn't designed for .357 though. The L frame fixed that dilemma. People like to disregard the .38 Special now since they only think of it in the context of snub-noses. Ridiculous claims are made about it being equivalent to the .380ACP even though the round is more ballistically akin the the vaunted 9mm Parabellum. |
|
If they'd used 158s instead of 125s in their K frames they wouldn't have had as many issues.

What if your pistol won't handle +P? Get a new one. Any 38 can handle +P. The modern 38 +P is quite wimpy. Occasional use won't blow off the top strap! |

I have a old 66 here in the bedroom loaded with 38 nyclads, not sure the weight 129's I think. They are ment out of short barrels. Make your shots count (with the aid of laser grips for low light) and no worries.
The police been dropping bad guys for decades with 38s. The modern generation, don't seem any tougher then back when the cartridge was invented. I tote a 442 in my pocket 99% of the time. I feel reasonably protected in a life or death situation. If I need more the 45 or another 38 drop into another pocket. If I'm looking for a fight I carry the rifle. |

I still want to get a S&W Bodyguard. I've carried stainless J frames for years, but I turned to black/blue finishes again. If I'm sitting and the butt peaks out, I want the person across from me to think it's my phone, not a gun. I think these are hydra shoks. Out of subbie length barrels these won't expand. |

In the old Nyclad round. Wow. So I am not the oldest one up at this hour. At least no one started talking about SuperVels. I actually have SuperVels loaded into my SP101. They must be 30+ years old. Probably time to put something else in... |
|
Another vote for the good old 158 grain lead FBI load. I also use the Nyclad version. I am not old enough to have used the Supervel stuff, but I have seen it and read about it.
I do like the 135 grain Gold Dot stuff as well. |

Hydrashok 147 gr +p+ expanded and penetrated well in my unscientific testing.
They often do around 900 fps even from a snub. So that's whats in my Ruger LCR. |

What if your pistol won't handle +P? I have an early 442. It isn't rated for a steady diet of +P (per S&W), but I've run a box (20) or two thru it with no ill effects. At the moment it's loaded with the Hornady Critical Defense 110gr +P. |

I logged back into this thread to say that I had found a non +p .38 load that I felt comfortable with and it is the Hornady Critical Defense 38 Special NON +p with 110 gr FTX bullets. |

What if your pistol won't handle +P? If you have an old Smith or Colt, don't worry about it. Regular use of +P ammunition will make the revolver go out of time, but it won't blow up or anything like that. Shoot your regular practice sessions with standard pressure ammunition. Fire a few +Ps once every couple of months to make sure your aim is good. |

I often carry a .38, sometimes a pair. Both are loaded with 135gr +P Speer Gold Dots.
If I couldn't find those I'd use DPX. Or Nyclads. Or Hydrashoks. Or Golden Sabres. Or LRN, FMJ, wadcutters, or whatever. I prefer to carry premium ammunition, but if I couldn't, I'd make do and get it done with whatever I did have. |

If you have an alloy frame revolver its not recommended you shoot too much +P ammo through it. I carry 158 gr hollow points but their not +P and both of my Dick Specials are steel not alloy.

Just inherited a Taurus model 85 I have one of these as well.....run generic Remington SJHP's and have no fears. Might not be a Lapua .338 but it aint no pointed stick neither. Quality modern hollow points are going to be a hell of a deterent to most threats assuming you do your part and put the holes in places that count. |

Hornady Custom .38 Special 158GR XTPhttp://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz95/VictorCastle/ColtDetectiveHollowpointPicA.jpg Damn, that's purdy, my Colt Cobras nickel finish & grips are shot from wear. Now, back to ammo. I'm really on the fence w/XTP or other FJHP's when it comes to non+P loads. I would think that a SJHP would give better expansion but, by far I am no expert, in fact, I am somewhat in the dark. There is a lot of good info in this thread but for us non+P folks who like to practice with what one carries and being affordable is what I'm still chasing. Would a non jacketed HP's provide better performance? Up until more recently I never gave much thought to standard pressure .38 loads. |

Once again
158 gr, Lead Semi-wadcutter Hollowpoint +P Best thing going in a .38. |
