I'm gonna stick with my Speer Gold Dots. You can ask our own Blitz_308 since he took a couple rounds in the hand from a perp... did some nasty damage for what little it touched.
 Oh and fuck that POS that's rotting in prison.

The only 2 that get the nod from the "best choices in self defense ammo" are Speer Gold Dot 135gr +P (53921) and Corbon 110 gr JHP DPX.

I wouldn't call the 19 a .357 but rather a .38 that can fire some .357s. That frame wasn't designed for .357 though. The L frame fixed that dilemma. People like to disregard the .38 Special now since they only think of it in the context of snub-noses. Ridiculous claims are made about it being equivalent to the .380ACP even though the round is more ballistically akin the the vaunted 9mm Parabellum. |

I have a old 66 here in the bedroom loaded with 38 nyclads, not sure the weight 129's I think. They are ment out of short barrels. Make your shots count (with the aid of laser grips for low light) and no worries.
The police been dropping bad guys for decades with 38s. The modern generation, don't seem any tougher then back when the cartridge was invented. I tote a 442 in my pocket 99% of the time. I feel reasonably protected in a life or death situation. If I need more the 45 or another 38 drop into another pocket. If I'm looking for a fight I carry the rifle. |

Another vote for the good old 158 grain lead FBI load. I also use the Nyclad version. I am not old enough to have used the Supervel stuff, but I have seen it and read about it.
I do like the 135 grain Gold Dot stuff as well. |

Hydrashok 147 gr +p+ expanded and penetrated well in my unscientific testing.
They often do around 900 fps even from a snub. So that's whats in my Ruger LCR. |

I often carry a .38, sometimes a pair. Both are loaded with 135gr +P Speer Gold Dots.
If I couldn't find those I'd use DPX. Or Nyclads. Or Hydrashoks. Or Golden Sabres. Or LRN, FMJ, wadcutters, or whatever. I prefer to carry premium ammunition, but if I couldn't, I'd make do and get it done with whatever I did have. |

If you have an alloy frame revolver its not recommended you shoot too much +P ammo through it. I carry 158 gr hollow points but their not +P and both of my Dick Specials are steel not alloy.

Now, back to ammo. I'm really on the fence w/XTP or other FJHP's when it comes to non+P loads. I would think that a SJHP would give better expansion but, by far I am no expert, in fact, I am somewhat in the dark. There is a lot of good info in this thread but for us non+P folks who like to practice with what one carries and being affordable is what I'm still chasing. Would a non jacketed HP's provide better performance? Up until more recently I never gave much thought to standard pressure .38 loads.
